Topic: Iphone app for determining inaudible crack sounds (7 msgs / 143 lines)
1) From: Mary Shue
Hi,
Ok, I searched all the digests I had in my email and couldn't find
this. Someone wrote about an Iphone application that can measure
sounds reproducibly. It was in conjunction with not being able to
hear the sound of the 1st or 2nd crack because of other room noises
and the Behmor noise. Can anyone help me with the name of this app?
Thanks.

I found the thread, here is the info:
... got an application for my iPhone called "Spectrogram" which visually
displays sounds. First and second crack sounds are distinct and easily
detected on the screen. The last time I over roasted, I simply forgot to
put Spectogram running on the iPhone by the roaster.
I think the thread was called Hearing cracks, aka. I did it, started by
Pecan Jim. It said, further down in the thread, by Samuel Goldberger, that
it's a $4.95 app.

Actually, I started it off 12/13/2009 in the thread "Seeing First crack"
Here's a repost:

So, in my quest to build a roaster (someday), I have thought, how useful would it be to be able to detect the cracks?
Well, that remains to be seen, but the other day, I was at a party and ran into a friend (and fellow homeroaster) who showed me an app for his iPhone, that I immediately went and downloaded. It is an audio spectrum analyzer which gives a waterfall display. Now, the accuracy of the iPhone's built in mic leaves much to be desired, but it's an interesting tool nonetheless.
Anyway, here are some spectrograms of my HG roast of 250g of Oriente:http://www.radioactive.org/pix/First.jpgMore cracks are visible. Again, on the right is where I shook the basket.http://www.radioactive.org/pix/Coasting.jpgHere I turned off the heat gun and coasted a little bit before starting cooling.">http://www.radioactive.org/pix/Outlier.jpgBlue is low level, red higher level, and white is higher still. There is a frequency scale on the right which is largely obscured, but more visible in other spectrograms I took. The first crack is shown in the middle, to the left and right is where I was shaking the fry basket and bowls that I use to roast in. The red background is the noise of the heat gun.http://www.radioactive.org/pix/First.jpgMore cracks are visible. Not too difficult, at least in some roasters. I'd been having trouble
hearing the cracks when I switched to the Nesco, though I don't think
that was the motivation for taping a bean mass volume gauge (read:
roughly calibrated marks on a piece of skinny masking tape) to the
handle's upright. And, yeah, beans and roasts vary some, but I assure
you that when the top of the agitated (1) bean mass goes from
(typically) 12.5% to near 50% in around one minute, yeah, you've seen
first crack. Doesn't do so much for second crack, at least not for the
limited amount of it I want to have happen.http://www.sweetmariascoffee.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f%&tÉ5#p4724(1) they're stirred, not shaken. perhaps you're thinking of a
