There seems to be lots of funds to do research to find out that
something formerly believed to be bad for you is now good for you.
Obviously, coffee can be abused, although I doubt anyone on this list
ever believed that reasonable consumption was bad for you...

There have been over 10,000 (no exaggeration) studies done over many years.
No one study has proven "conclusively"
either coffee is beneficial of detrimental!

6) From: Ryan M. Ward
My thoughts exactly, what about those of us drinking over 10 cups a day? We graduate students drink coffee instead of water!

My wife and I use that as a test of a new doctor: We walk into her or
his examining room clutching our 32oz coffee cups, and if the first
remark is, "You drink too much coffee, and that is the cause of whatever
brought you here today" then we fire them. We do drink a lot of coffee,
sure enough, but we have been doing so for years, so whatever new
problem we have is due to other causes (though we admit that our coffee
consumption may exacerbate any issue).

I survived my first and now I'm a home roaster gone wild. I'm just beside my
self miKe. Damn you anyway, when and where is the next one?
I'm am a self confessed coffee joker but the last question is a serious one.
I have not had time for "unreasonable consumption" since the last PNW
roaster gathering.
I will commit to being a volunteer or private slave for the next event if
needed miKe. Just give a shot out.

13) From: Jim Gundlach
The root of this problem is the definition of "conclusive scientific
results" To meet this criteria, the studies have to use double blind
experimental research methods. This requires randomly assigning human
subjects to two groups, one exposed to coffee and the other not. This
has to be done in a way that the subjects do not know what they were
exposed to. The basic fact is that this kind of research is
impossible with human subjects and coffee. The non-experimental
results simply relies on studies that ask people about their coffee
consumption and correlate that with data on their health conditions.
These results may not meet the scientific ideal of a double blind
experimental study but it is best we can get. Sometimes we have to
rely on less ideal research methods. For example it is not
experimental results that tell us directly that drunk drivers are
more likely to have accidents that kill people. Just because we
cannot conduct a double blind experiment on the effect of drunk
driving does not mean we should feel free to consume a lot of alcohol
and then go on out and drive because the asserted relationship is not
based on the ideal scientific research method.
The evidence of the effects of reasonable levels of coffee
consumption on health is generally positive. If the results were
negative I am sure there would be massive campaigns to make people
quit drinking coffee even though the results were not based on the
best research methods.
For what it is worth, this comment is from someone who has
taught research methods for slightly more than three decades.

When you start quoting numbers, give a reference for them. Where does the "10,000" number come from? Which study or

In Silicon Valley, doctors used to ask "do you work at HP?" "Yes" "Don't
drink their coffee."
HP coffee used to take permanent marker off a dry erase whiteboard.
