Well, Rayo, I wonder if you've ever tried a bottomless portafilter? I'll bet not. They have serious advantages and few disadvantages. I wonder why you offer an opinion if you've never used one? I wonder if you've even seen on used? Bet not.
I used a metal lathe to cut the bottoms off mine. You can use other means such as a drill press and hole saw. The advantages are:
1. Nothing to keep clean. Coffee never touches it.
2. Nothing to keep warm or cold. The Coffee doesn't touch it.
3. It keeps the Coffee a bit warmer. (This has been tested).
4. It allows more clearance for machines where you can't get a mug under the regular PF.
5. It is fun to watch, though that wears off...
6. It does allow you to see how the coffee is packed etc... though that wears off too.
7. It does once in awhile make a mess if you don't know how to load a basket, but if you see 6., above, that will happen very rarely and then almost never.
Most of the best coffee bars in SF use them (Bluebottle et al). If they were crap, I doubt they would. If they offered more disadvantages over advantages, I doubt they would.
Thanks again, Rayo for your well-founded and experienced opinion. If you want, I'll make the trim the mouthpiece of your trombone so it looks like a bottomless at no charge, shipping included.

straight or gay most bars in San Francisco like bottomless!!
while all of your points may be may or may not (most not actually true or
could be true for ANY portafilter) they have nothing to do with the fact
that Ray-O has tried one or not.
you sound like the kid in the playground who just won the pot of marbles and

There is this to say about that- I don't frequent Las Vegas- currently. If
you can cover all your bets, I'll hop Greyhound for the 1,800 mile trip out,
and drive back in a new car.

you do with a bottom once you have gone bottomless?

Hi Barry      These "legless frogs" as you called them are probab=
ly the same ones or at least siblings of the same group who gave their body=
for the advance of aeronautical sciences as it was presented to this post =
by Mr Bruce Garley on his now famous and I quote  :" Apparently the 3rd d=
erivative of position at Airbus is called French."      First and=
instinctive reaction most of you will probably have would be something lik=
e:"Stop having fun of  these poor little jerks aka frogs french people"!=
This post should not become racist as it is apparently a big sin in =
this world we live in.                           =

                                     =
The fact is, there is no racism at all in these =
postings.    Let's remember that most of that started from the signal t=
o noise ratio or the power of the message without the flaws and the blablas=
that we often see in most of Ray posts. If you resent a too feable  d3x/=
dt3  or vice-versa ratio in what Ray wrote you should wait a while and tr=
y a second attempt or even a third at your lecture because I realized the i=
mportance of almost every words in his posts, often with concealed but pres=
ent significations that become obvious and very interesting when discovered=
.                         =
                         =
                         =
                         =
      =
But I digress, let's come back to our legless frogs and d3x=
/dt3 third derivative of position at Airbus. Think of the apparently calm=
boiling water but very dangerous explosion into a sudden explosion with=
no warnings we all fear . Thanks to the now legless frog bodies we were ab=
le to determine the change in the pace of the accelerations like we have in=
coffee roasting going from 1st crack to 2nd crack and in Airbus airliner. =
                                     =
                                     =
The premise is that if a frog is placed in b=
oiling water it will jump out but if it is placed in cold water that is slo=
wly heated it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. The=
third derivative of position or jerk will be zero according to the d3x/dt3=
signal to noise equation ratio.               =
                         =

                          =
                                  =
conclusion:  Think of Ray as a Stentor roeseli, one of the bi=
ggest known unicellular organisms; you can read his posts a few times and s=
till go on discovering funny veritam but like the Stentor trumpetus, it won=
't survive bottomless because it is how  they catch their victims .   =
Have a good day.    Denis            =
