Topic: coffee fruit (4 msgs / 190 lines)

I've only had coffee fruit dried, and made into Qishir tea, but I'd love to try the real stuff straight sometime. Sadly, it isn't available anywhere here.
Yah, it's all marketing. But thought there might be some interest here.*http://coffeefruitenergy.com/* These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. I got a coffee plant a couple years ago. The first couple years my harvest
was 1 bean each year. 2 tiny little peaberrys. This year it looks like I'll
be getting a real crop, it's loaded with cherries, and the first couple are
ripening. I should be able to get a good taste of coffee fruit this year.

Dave,
After about five/six years our indoor trees (from seeds received
from Tom years ago) are flowering and fruiting like crazy, we've
harvested close to one hundred cherries or so. Interesting
flavor, nobody can agree on what it reminds them of (except not
chicken ...), kind of a mix between a mild store bought Bing
cherry and some sort of citrus, odd, but pleasant. Fibrous too.
Curious to hear what yours taste like.

In Hawaii, and probably other tropical places, coffee is grown as a garden =
ornamental as well as a commercial product. Also, I used to come across cof=
fee trees occasionally while hiking. I suppose the seeds had been scattered=
by birds. The fruit tastes pleasently sweetish, with maybe a plum-cherry-f=
loral taste. But there is very little flesh around the seed, not much more =
than a thick film of gelatinous fiber. If someone wanted to grow and market=
coffee for the fruit, it would probably take many generations of selection=
to develop coffee cherries with substantial edible pulp.
