Topic: Behmor Hack? (7 msgs / 239 lines)
1) From: Robert Yoder
Greetings,
I was wondering if anyone had found a way to add a manual P2-type drop to the Behmor.
It seems it might be very helpful to lower heat around the time of 1st crack, no matter what profile one was using at the time.
Any ideas?
Happy Roasting,
robert

Back when I first got a first production run Behmor to run through it's
paces I modified it so the heater element was switchable between Behmor
control or external control. Literally a heavy duty 15A AC toggle switch.
External heater power plugged into a voltage boost variable transformer (aka
Variac) so could boost or lower heat on demand.

Hi MiKe,
That's exactly what I was thinking! Thanks! Was it hard to find the Heater Power Circuit?
Do you still have that machine?
Congratulations on your expansion!

I didn't mess with the heater control circuit itself at all. I physically
"split wired" the heater element with the split controlled by a toggle
switch so it's controlled by the Behmor internally or external separate
power plug depending on position of toggle switch. So I guess I DID mess
with the Heater Power Circuit, just not the control element. Not hard to
find with right side expose. There be wires going to the heater element!
Yes, still have that Behmor somewhere in the garage. Been meaning to bring
it down to the Roastery, just haven't gotten around to it.

Far, far less glamorous and exciting than modding the heating element wires=
, but I always... well... cracked the door, lol.
I guess my Behmor finally died, the second owner told me.
In 2 years of use the roast count went over 1200 batches and just over 1,00=
0 lbs before finally crapping out.  That was with almost no appreciation =
for warnings in the manual (not that I'm recommending avoiding them).  We=
used the Behmor in commercial settings when we needed to, often continuall=
y running it for 15-20 hours.
Don't think I ever let it run full cooling cycle in between batches and alm=
ost always pressed 'Stop' after a minute of the cooling cycle running to ta=
ke the drum out and dump the beans elsewhere.  Then I'd start the cooling=
cycle up again and let it run until just cool enough that I could fire off=
 the next batch.
... those things are tanks.
Now I work with new tanks... That there little CCR Hottop over my right sho=
ulder and this here USRC 3k over my left shoulder.   :-p

As MikeM said, it's just a matter of re-wiring the heater leads
through a variac if you variable control, or a toggle if you just
want to turn them off. The heater leads are blue, coming off the
upper right had side of the PCB. If you just want to put a toggle
in, I suggest putting it in via the left hand panel leads. Just send
me a note off list if you wish if you need more detail (I'm thinking
wiring diagrams which we can't send to the list). It's really pretty
simple and there is no diagnostic circuit that will cause an error if
you mess with the heaters. But it should be mentioned, that with
just splicing into the existing profiles won't let you boost the heat
above the profile maximums as the system will just cut off your power.

-ignores the fact that a Heat Control is at work to profile the roast
temperatures. If you cause a "brownout" with an autotransformer, plug it in
to my 125v line potential or manually switch the heater off, the Heat
Controller will be seen to be jumping up and down, trying to get the roast
temperature back on track.

assumed the position of Temperature Controller for the duration. One
wonders just how JB and all the Beta testers missed the all-important
Fiddler's Switch.
Rumor has it the 1750 will have more heater power, Triac control with an
external Fiddler's Pot.
All the misdirected time and expense in designing and proving the machine,
and it lacks the Fiddler's controls.
