1) From: Demian Ebert
Afternoon-
I just finished putting the screws back in my hottop. A few months ago the
machine started leaking beans on the second of back-to-back roasts. I
ignored it for a while and stopped doing back-to-back roasts unless I needed
to. Eventually it dropped almost 20 g of coffee into the cooling tray during
a roast and I finally decided to do something about it. I sent an email to
Hottop USA describing the problem and had a reply and diagnosis in under two
hours on a Sunday. The problem was a faulty solenoid or spring on the bean
chute door. I ordered a replacement. Today I finally had some free time to
tear the machine apart and put the new parts in. I've got to say the
instructions on the Hottop site were spot on perfect. Everything fit and
seems to work. I tested it without beans and the door opens just fine now.
The old spring seems a little stiff and sticky compared to the new one. It
could simply be a build-up of coffee oil that was preventing the spring from
doing it's job.
Also vaccuumed a pretty good pile of chaff out of the internals of the
machine. I'll have to take the back panel off more frequently now that I've
broken all the screws loose.

Michael at Hot Top is a great guy to work with and you are right their
manuals are right on. It is a good product and company to deal with.

Last time I visited Michael(early winter) he said he hoped to see it by
Spring but that didn't happen. The design/features in the "forthcoming 1lb'r
& changes to the existing HT line sounded good but everything was still
subject to change at that point.
I emailed him recently asking if he had a time frame on the 1lb model & all
he said was "No".

I suspect that the biggest problem that they face is getting enough heating
power to have good control of the roasts. In order to be able to sell it to
the largest number of people, it has to be able to run on a 110 volt, 15 amp
circuit and that limits the amount of power available. Just requiring a 20
amp circuit would help a lot, but would further limit their sales. Since
the market for this roaster is not very large to begin with, they don't want
to further reduce it. If I were building it, I would use a large heater
with a lot of excess capability for maximum control and run it on a large
220 volt circuit. Of course, I would only sell about ten units and would
loose my shirt and the rest of my clothes, but I would have a good roaster.

To be clear, I did not speak with them about the new model. What I said is
pure speculation on my part. I may be entirely wrong, but what I said is a
real problem that they face.

I live about 20 minutes from HT USA & have done all my business with Michael
in person since day one. Last time I was over there getting some warranty
work/updates done I mentioned a mod I was thinking of trying(but haven't).
He laughed & said that the new Hts would have something very similar & went
on to describe several other features that the 1lbr would have & when he
hoped to see it. He asked that I not mention specifics about the machine & I
haven't. He did state several times that both he & the factory have paid
close attention to all the suggestions/complaints that owners have sent in
over the past few years and that we could expect to see many improvements
along those lines.
He liked my through the wall insulated Omega T/Cs & requested specific
info which he forwarded to the factory. Maybe we will see a much improved
Bt/Et sensor on the new versions??

Hi John,
Any chance you could provide pictures of the "through the wall insulated Omega T/Cs"?
I think that they could be posted in the gallery, and I would love to see them off-list, if you could. (robotyonder).
Thanks, and,
Happy Roasting,
