Topic: Saturday Morning Coffee (9 msgs / 248 lines)
1) From: Yakster
Had a cup of Brazil this morning followed by a slightly weak cup of freshly
roasted Sumatra. We're camping in Felton for four days and I decided not to
roast ahead of time, I just bought along the remnants of Brazil from last
weekend to get me started and will roast over the campfire as we go. This
time I packed the CCD instead of the AeroPress... I use the AeroPress at
work where the speed and the ability to pop the puck in the trash and rinse
it off are ideal, but I like making coffee in the Clever Coffee Dripper
more.
I packed a 10 ounce bag of Sumatra, an 8 ounce bag of Ethiopian IMV, and
another bag of Costa Rica to roast... the old-fashined popcorn popper likes
5 - 6 ounce batches so I roast half a bag at a time... got to keep enough
wood on the fire to keep it hot enough. This time I also packed the raw
almonds to roast, but my first try resulted in a real uneven roast of
almonds with a dozen or so burnt ones because I wasn't watching it as
closely as the coffee. I also got some metal rods to drive in the ground
that have curves to hold hot dog or marshmallow sticks over the fire that I
can hook the roaster into to save my wrist, it helped quite a bit.
I enjoyed both cups quite well, but the only problem was that I didn't
realize the enamelware cups were so large so I dosed the Sumatra too light,
probably brewed closer to 300 ml instead of 200 ml that I dosed for.
We're having beautiful weather at the beach, sunny with a cool breeze that
beats the heat wave going on back home.

Brian-
They are camping in the Santa Cruz Mountains and Felton was an old logging
town where they cut down the giant redwoods to build San Francisco and the
surrounding areas many moons ago. Chris lives in the San Jose area and we
have had a hot weekend here in the Bay Area. It's 94 at my back yard and it's
90 in San Jose.
And to keep on subject, I made a VP of the Colombia Tolima Merediano
microlot roasted on Thursday afternoon to a nice C+ to start our Sunday
morning here in NorCal. Very good cup indeed and felt like drinking lots
more but decided to keep it on the slow side and just have a couple of cups.
Cheers,
John in NorCal

It's 92.5 in my back yard now in South San Jose. I love camping in Big
Basin to escape the heat and wander in the woods.
Oh, the pool has been sweet today! Got to roast some more SM's Liquid Amber
tonight so it can age for at least 3-4 days before I begin to use it. We
should get together and do something roasting-related in this area one of
these days.

Hi there,
I must admit I did like my hike in Big Basin a couple a years ago.  As to getting together, I'll be in San Jose Tuesday- Thursday and am looking forward to my beans I sent ahead of time, so they will be nicely aged this week.

Yes, we're camping in Henry Cowell State Park next to the Roaring Camp train
in the town of Felton and hit Capitola beach for swimming, sunning, and
shopping. It was nice and I was able to talk my family into waiting in the
car while I rushed into Verve for a double Sumatran Blue Batik shot before
hitting Malabar for excellent Shri Lankan Vegan food. Very California and
I'm trying to soak it in as I have to spend three days this week in Plano
and I'm not sure I'll be able to find good coffee or non-smoking restaurants
there. I plan on taking my AeroPress and hand grinder to Plano. I'm
covering for some of our SEs but wish I could have gone to the trial in
Seattle or Portland instead. It's just good to be working,, though.
Now we're stopping in at Asana Tea house so my daughter can get a nice tea
since that's her fancy.
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend too.

Capitola is a great little town. I love some of those beach bars/restaurants.
Twenty five years ago I was best man at a wedding held at Shadowbrook, a restaurant in Capitola that flows several
stories down a hillside. The morning of the wedding, we heard screams coming from the girls' side of the motel we were
staying at. It seems the groom-to-be decided to climb into bed with his fiance, not sober enough to remember that she
was sharing a bed with her mother.
One of my sisters-in-law lives in Scotts Valley and is a reporter for the Santa Cruz Sentinel. When we drive north to
visit them we stay in Capitola. I always roast a couple pounds of whatever coffee I'm drinking at the time and bring it
to them.
