Topic: Noise canceling headphones (22 msgs / 464 lines)
1) From: Brian Kamnetz
Many times on the list I have seen comments from people who, due to
hearing loss, are unable to hear first or second crack over the noise
of the roaster.
Woot.com sells one thing a day, if I understand correctly. They sell
it until it is gone, or until midnight, whichever comes first. That's
my understanding, anyway.
Today's product is noise-canceling headphones:
Able Planet NC500SC Sound Clarity Noise Canceling Headphoneshttp://www.woot.com/default.aspxWoot.com is selling them for $65 including shipping. Checking around
on the web, it looks like the usual selling price is around $150.
Amazon sells them for ~$200.
There are 19 user reviews at Amazon:http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Sound-Clarity-Canceling-Headphones/product-reviews/B000OQUMKI/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ieF8&showViewpoints=1I have no personal experience with either Able Planet or their
products, or with Woot.com.
I should say that all this information is as I understand it, but I
have a long history of getting things wrong, so I recommend that all
who are interested verify for themselves.

Just what I was thinking- the jet jocks on the flight line risked having
their hearing destroyed by the compressor whine of taxiing aircraft, except
for the Mickey Mouse ear protectors they wore. I wish I had been able to
acquire a pair for the pistol range, with their >30 dB reduction.
My experience with the active noise-canceling hearing protectors is that
they tend to "motorboat," or oscillate at very low frequencies if the (-)
feedback amplitude was too high. They might work if the (-) feedback can be
notched or the pass band peaked in the LF "pop" and the HF "crack" range. If
you're going to want active noise suppressors, take it all the way.

Noise canceling headsets find & remove statistically stationary noise --
that is constant energy content within a frequency band over a time period
is removed. I use them when working in a lab filled with electrical
equipment. The constant drone of fans, transformer hum, etc is suppressed
but conversation, but the annoying beeps of the malfunctioning UPS are not.
I would think that isolated pops, such as at the beginning & end of first
crack would likely be heard. However, crackles at a constant rate (within
the sample period of the algorithm), such as at the height of second, may be
suppressed. They only way to be sure is to try, algorithms/parameters used
by different headsets will vary.

I defer. Maybe I could equalize them with pink noise but the rough set up is

I find that the same musicians' earplugs I wear to attend rock concerts and musical theater (and to rehearse with an orchestra in a small banquet room, jam with a rock band, or sit near the mains in an amplified acoustic folk concert) filter out enough extraneous noise that I can hear the cracks in an i-Roast more clearly (though I now use a Behmor which does not mask the sound of the cracks). And they don't require any power.

Hi all,
I have been a Wooter for a few years now. Once a month they have a "Woot
off" where they have a new item listed as soon as the previous item sells
out. It usually lasts for about 40+ hours. The holy grail of any "Woot
off" is the elusive "Bag of Crap". It sells for $0.01, plus $5.00
shipping, and they sell out 3000+ of the things in about 20 seconds. You
have no idea what you are going to get. I have only been able to get one in
over 24 "Woot offs".
By the way, I am new to home roasting. I found a Poppery II for $3.95 at
the local thrift store, and it has yielded some of the best coffee I have
had for many years. I am very excited about the prospect of having great,
FRESH, coffee all the time. I was so frustrated with all the crappy,
inconsistent coffee on the market, that I almost stopped drinking it. I
have been buying the Sweet Marias samplers. How fun!!! I also was able to
purchase the components for a SC/GG roaster on eBay for under $70.00.
Unfortunately I had a very uneven roast on a pound of Sumatra Blue Batak
Tarabarita Peaberry yesterday. I think I tried to do too much at once. I
am going to let it rest for a day or two before I try it. I hope it is not
ruined.
Regards,
JPF

I once borrowed my daughter's stethoscope, but unfortunately while it's a
real, working stethoscope, it's designed for much smaller heads and felt
like it was going to push through me eardrums so I gave it up.
No real need with the Behmor, but some of the tiny crack and whoosh noises
before first crack interest me.
Noise canceling headsets are great for plane trips or drowning out regular
hums, I have a pair I keep with me in my backpack. Never thought to try it
