Well, the Faema finally made it here. Sadly, it's too late to futz with it, so I'll have to pull first shots tomorrow.
*sigh*

You should have planned ahead and had some decaf ready.

You misunderstand. The machine is in my office; I have to head home or
dinner and play with the kids. And I want to watch for leaks during
the day.

hah hah. Actually, the machine is at work, and I had to go home for dinner and to play with the kids.
This morning, I pulled my first shots on the Faema. Still have a slight leak on the fitting at the bottom of the boiler, have to address that at some point...
Anyway, dialing in my technique on the HX....it's fun and tasty!
First shot was 30 sec, right on the money, but had room for improvement.
Second shot spritzed a little bit from the bottomless pf, and went slightly fast, but overall was not bad, about what I could get from my Krups thermoblock.
Third went to a coworker; it was about like the second.
Fourth, I dialed the grind a notch tighter, and got a slower extraction, a little thicker, better....
Still fighting donut extraction; have to work on my distribution :D
It's reassuring that I'm about where I left off with the Krups thermoblock. It isn't worse, and with the bottomless PF exposing my flawed technique, I now have the feedback to improve, and a kick-butt machine to do it on, too.
Thanks, Dennis!

Whether solicited or not ;-)
(no, really, I appreciate it!)
Here's the Faema in its new home. I bought a Seville Classics Ultra Heavy Duty Garage Rolling Cabinet at Sam's Club for around $170, and drilled a hole in the top to feed the water tubing; Then I installed a square 5gal water bottle and a flojet water pump (around $100 on Amazon); I drain into a 6 liter bucket. At the end of the day, I can wash out the bucket, fill with hot water, and soak the portafilters in it.http://www.radioactive.org/pix/faema/bar3.jpgI have the machine itself sitting in an aluminum cookie sheet to deal with any leaks we have at the moment...still working that out :D">http://www.radioactive.org/pix/faema/bar1.jpghttp://www.radioactive.org/pix/faema/bar2.jpghttp://www.radioactive.org/pix/faema/bar3.jpgI have the machine itself sitting in an aluminum cookie sheet to deal with any leaks we have at the moment...still working that out :D
Note the stylish cups and knock box (just delivered yesterday, thanks SM!)
I have a silicone baking liner on the countertop to build the shots on.
The bottom drawer is filled with towels. next up is coffee, in ziploc bags. May have to find some tupperware that'll fit nicely. above that I have a few spare parts, wrenches and screwdrivers, and the top drawer has accessories, like thermometers, pastry brushes, and thermocouple.
Oh, did I mention my officemate is away on vacation, and has no idea what's waiting in our office? Won't he be surprised. Heh heh heh.
