Topic: RIP Caffe Rosto (10 msgs / 164 lines)
1) From: slinkster
Well, my Caffe Rosto seems to be RIP after nearly five years of
thrice-weekly use. Husband the Electrical Engineer is going to take it
apart this weekend but I won't hold my breath that he'll be able to
resurrect it.
The sad little Melitta roaster I found at thrift is just really not
going to cut it so it's time to dig up the popcorn popper schematic...

3) From: Dean
I also had one of my 2 Rostos give it up recently after 5-6 years of
steady use and the occasional repair--bypassing the thermal fuse,
scraping and/or blowing out the gunk--and a few mods (installed
thermocouples, split wiring). This time it was a motor bearing that I
can't readily repair. And just when I was getting the hang of it.......
I felt like I had to replace it (no spare?!?!!!) but since the iRoast
was (is?) out of stock I was >forced< to get a Behmor. It's been
about a month--still learning the ropes, but I'm warming up to it.
It's easy to like the capacity.
Probably more than a few Rosto users on the list--free advice is only
a careless question away!
Condolences & best regards,
Dean

I have and still use a Rosto (love it!). About a year ago I was able to buy
parts from here (hope I don't get in trouble with Tom & Maria):http://www.greenbeanery.ca/bean/catalog/index.php?cPathv_205I purchased a new heating element and a used motor - very happy with what I
received. I'd call/email them first before ordering.
OTOH, if you decide not to fix the Rosto I'd be happy to buy it from you
(same offer to you too Dean or any one else who has one sitting around).

I bought a Behmor when SM's first started selling them to the general
public, and haven't looked back. I have kept the Cafe Rosto as a back-up for
the time when my Behmor "takes a vacation) as machines always do sooner or
later. If it weren't for that I'd probably sell my Cafe Rosto (which is
nearly new).

I had a Rosto and it was the worst thing I heve bought. All it did was spray
chaff all over the place.

That sounds more like an air popper without a mesh bag over the spout to
catch the chaff. My CR collected a lot of chaff from most beans, but it
didn't spray everywhere.
Now this Melitta, on the other hand...

Marc - if DH says the problem with my CR is non-recoverable I'll put it
in the mail for you.

Simple explanation:
Back during that ERA I was considered the Rosto Jedi Master, therefore a
Rosto could not work for you!

There may yet be hope for my old CR! Husband says "the neutral wire"
has broken but hasn't had time to determine if this is reparable or
not. I would think it is, as he's resurrected other things with a "bad
neutral wire".
