Schumer wants warning against coffee stockpiling
By TOM MURPHY
Java drinkers rest easy. Sen. Charles Schumer has perked up to the
spiraling cost of coffee beans, and he wants something done about it.
The New York Democrat has asked U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk to
warn major coffee growers Brazil and Vietnam at an International
Coffee Organization meeting later this month to not stockpile their
crops, a move that could further boost bean prices that already have
spiked this summer because of poor crops in some regions.
The fallout from rising prices has been brewing for months. Coffee
futures spiked in June and have remained high. Coffee producers and
sellers -- including Folgers and Dunkin' Donuts coffee maker J.M.
Smucker Co. and the Wawa convenience store chain -- have already
raised their prices. Starbucks Corp. has said it will absorb the
higher cost.
Why the buzz? According to Schumer, the issue goes beyond bad crops.
The senator said in a statement that Vietnam bought more than 60,000
tons of its own coffee last spring and was considering a plan to
stockpile up to 200,000 tons. Meanwhile, Brazilian growers have
pressured their government to consider a similar move.
Schumer said coffee exporters are acting like "the OPEC of coffee," a
reference to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which
has a large influence on oil prices.
"Play by the rules, that's all we're saying," Schumer said Monday
afternoon in a phone interview.
The senator noted in a letter to Kirk that Brazil and Vietnam have
accounted for about 45 percent of world coffee exports over the past
10 years, and the United States is the world's largest coffee
importer.
"If it was just weather, there's not much you can do, but it's beyond
weather," he said in the interview. "It's people trying to manipulate
the market. We want to stop that."
Kirk will review Schumer's request and discuss it with him, said
Carol Guthrie, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative.

Indeed, Farm Gate seems a great way to go.
But wait, what about people in business who don't have tens of thousands of
dollars to spend all at once to travel to countless countries visiting and
developing relationships with farmers? It takes many many years to develop
Farm Gate arrangements. Think Tom was doing a bunch of Farm Gate Coffees
when he first started Sweet Maria's years ago? Me thinks not.
Cost of greens going up 80 cents a pound in six months (over 50% increase)
hurts big time and makes it extremely difficult for start-up quality focused
roasters to survive, especially in the middle of a deep recession where
wholesale customers and yourself are barely keeping the doors open already.
The Futures Market trading including coffee, which Specialty Coffee Greens
prices are based on, are basically akin to legalized gambling by big time
money players.
This time Rayo you don't have a clue what you're talking about. Stick to
engineering and electronics.

Funny... when the fat cats in the U.S. do it then it's capitalism...
when anyone else does it then it's not playing by the rules. I say
let the coffee growers charge whatever they want to... supply and
demand will ultimately set the price.
I agree with you here... we're definitely not hearing the whole story...

The "whole story" is not as complex as you might think. Just as Opec
controls the price ( often very inflated due to stock piling ) of oil at
your local pump the largest growers of coffee can and probably have done the
same for years. Before commenting here read the first post in the thread and
try and understand the futures market as referred to in the original
article.

Exactly Joseph. Coffee is the 2nd most traded commodity on Earth. Does
anybody really believe that there has not been market manipulation in the
past? Pendergast's history of coffee, Uncommon Grounds, explains how the
coffee markets have been whip-lashed and cornered in the past, causing
extreme price fluctuations. He even documents how vast quantities of coffee
have been destroyed because of overproduction and greed in an effort to get
the prices back up. The little farmers can't handle this price volatility.
Farm Gate, and FT (I hope), are great efforts to protect the little farmer
who makes the kind of coffee we drool over.
