My poor, dear IR-I is having a problem and I wonder if anyone knows of a way to fix it. When I turn it on it sounds like your electric drill when the bushings are shot.  It pretty nearly got through a 7 minute roast with lots of noise and then smoke started to come out of it, a few beans turned oily, and I finally saw some sparks fly.  I removed the beans --not sure I can use that roast-- and tried again with nothing in it.  Same noise and inside it looked like there was a flame.  Turned it off immediately.  
I must have the machine several years --I got it used and bought a new glass container for it-- and have probably roasted a few hundred pounds.  Sometimes I use it every day and even a few times per day (after proper cooling) if I want to roast up a pound of coffee.  I have been roasting 86 grams at a time.
Does anyone think there is any hope.  It has been a wonderful machine!

Anyway, the iRoast's fan has brushes - maybe you wore them out? Sounds like it.
When I tore apart a busted iRoast, I took the motor apart and cleaned it, as a spare. IIRC, the rotor comes out first, and the brushes spring out from compartments on the sides; you can't easily get to the brushes from the outside without damaging their housing.

Thanks, but too late.  I took it apart today; tried putting some DW-40 on the inner parts.  Then I noticed that there are a couple of plastic side pieces that plug into the housing in which you have what must be the fan motor.  There was a spark jumping where that censor and the spinning fan motor meet.  I figured that something must be interfering and tried using my screw driver to wedge between it and the motor just burned out.  So I am resigned; the question now is, what is next.
it isn't that bad;  I guess I am ready for something new.  But what?
In the meantime, I am using my wife's heat gun.  Put the beans in a BBQ pop corn popper and roast over my kitchen sink, turning the popper every now and again.  The problem is knowing what the temperature is and controlling it.  it is an inexpensive heat gun; but with 1500 watts and two setting I should be able to do it.  I have started with 50g batches just to experiment; some inexpensive Panama Boquete which I happen to like!).  I went to Lowes to look for a thermocouple thermometer and they do not have it. I am really not sure how it even works.  do you clip a sensor wire to a bean or just let it dangle in the middle of the basket in which I am heating the beans?  I tried an oven thermometer; but it is too slow.   I  also tried my digital thermometer for cooking; kind of just pushed it into a hole in the basket.  either my beans are not getting hot enough or I can't get the thermometer to go over 300 degrees.,  It too is not fast enough.  My 50g roast took  about 13 or 14 minutes; not sure if I am baking the beans.
I am getting better at it but the roast is still uneven in color.  Looks like some moderately dark chocolate colored beans with dark almond colored beans.  that should have been right up to second crack.  At least none of the beans turned oily on me.  
so what do you think is the best roaster for a home roaster;  I drink my home roast every day and go through about 5 pounds of greens per month.  I would like a larger capacity roaster this time and the Behmor sounds like the one.  But I am really not into spending the $300 right now.  I though of a BBQ roaster --I have a good gas BBQ with a rotisserie- and it is very conveniently located in a screened porch off of my family room- but I feel like I will have to stand outside and monitor it and the question of measuring the temperatures remains.  
I know the Zack and Dani (Nesco) and that looks right, except for the capacity.  Any suggestions?
