Topic: Best brewing methods for addressing high LDL (7 msgs / 121 lines)

If you search the CoffeeGeek forums in the massive AeroPress thread you'll
find some posts by the inventor Alan Adler with some research on this
topic.
I think he found paper filter to be very effective so you could use any
paper filtering method if this concerns you.

Looks like there's a whole French Press and Cholesterol thread on CG. The
message I remember reading from Alan is here:http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/coffee/machines/203453#203453I use mostly paper filters not because of worries about cafestol and kahweol
but because my previous grinder was so bad with fines that French Press was
not an option. I also drink espresso, which does not filter out these
lipids. I have heard of some folks filtering their espresso shots through
paper, but I'm afraid I'm going to wait for doctor's orders before
considering this.

Oh, I forgot the occasional weekend pot of syphon coffee sans paper since I
use a Cory glass filter rod with my Yama syphon pot. I'll also sometimes
attempt Turkish coffee in an Ibrik which filters nothing out

Thanks so much for the prompt response. I (reluctantly) just ordered an
Aeropress as my LDL spiked recently and I have been told to make some
adjustments. Just had a cup of DP Jimma -Nigusie Lemma through a Capresso
automatic and couldn't taste it (after years of FP)! Hope Aeropress is a
happy medium.
Thanks again,
Matt

Or... maybe just drink your coffee with a Lipitor chaser in the morning &
Niaspan at night. Maybe add in a kicker of Lovaza.
Other thing to consider, in all seriousness, for anyone with elevated LDL
with other CHD risk factors: get your Dr to order a blood test fromhttp://www.bhlinc.com/. My cardiologist explained it this way: elevated LDL
by itself is a fairly crude measure. It turns out that LDL cholesterol
particles come in various sizes and densities and shapes, and some are not
that bad while others are really awful. You have your blood drawn locally,
they send it to the testing lab above a patent protected test, I'm told, so
others can't do it. It is pricey.
Seehttp://www.bhlinc.com/pati_results.php.
Anyway, long story short, I took it and I'm glad I did, as
