Topic: Uganda Coffee (6 msgs / 190 lines)
1) From: silas coelho
I'm helping, on business side, as a Volunteering Consultant (http://www.growmovement.org/)a very small coffee dryer processor in Uganda,
and I was wondering if anyone on this list had any experience with Uganda
Specialty Coffee?
Tom
I saw on the website that there are Specialty Coffee's in Uganda, but seems
you dont carry then anymore, any specific reason, are they not good enough,
or just hard to find a good one?

Coffee is a crop.  If you look at Tom's offerings you'll notice that ther=
e are plenty of origins that he currently doesn't have.  He doesn't have =
a Kenya, a Nicaragua, a Honduras, no Kona coffee, no Mexico coffee.  Does=
this mean that they don't produce quality coffee?  Absolutely not.  Ke=
nya coffee is often touted as some of the best in the world.  Are they ha=
rd to find?  Not at all.  They just aren't here yet (literally, as in n=
ot arrived in the States yet).
Tom has carried tons of Ugandan coffees before.  He will inevitably offer=
 some again.

True on all counts Brian. If you look up the Uganda trip in my
travelogues you can see the effort we made there, which up until now
has not panned out. I would love to get something effective going in
Uganda. It's no Kenya or Ethiopia; it's a body coffee, really
balanced, great espresso potential. But to get reliable, well-picked
and well-processed coffee from Uganda has been a problem. We have
been working on Mbale-Bududa area coffees, and Paida. But no samples
have passed the bar so far. We have a great group of farmers there,
and a great, passionate guy in Kampala who wants to see this work. I
think it will - fingers crossed, maybe next crop...

Uganda coffees are in fact in. But also true more shipments are on the way.
One must also remember Tom doesn't look for good coffees. Tom looks for
exceptional coffees, the best of the best from a particular coffee region.
And some years exceptional doesn't happen so Tom doesn't carry it. There are
currently 789 bags (like 52 TONS) of Bug' (Uganda Bugisu Sipi Falls to be
precise) available at Royal alone. IF it was exceptional Tom would be
offering some it I'm quite sure.

I saw that they do have quite a bit of Robustas, but for my surprise, they
have Kona (????I believe is not Kona itself, because it is a geographical
location, I would assume it is Arabica Bourbon, not sure).
From my understanding the most of Uganda coffee is mild and works well for
balanced expresso blend. Let me try to get some samples of this guy and see
how is that.
