I don't post much because it is usually the conversations are too technical
for me but I am always interested in what people have to say. I roast with
the bread machine/ heat gun method. Are there many of us left? I have a low
tech roasting system but am fortunate enough to have one of the best home
brewing systems. Last year at an auction I picked up a six month old nouva
simonelli commercial machine I believe it retails for about $7000.
Fortunately we were renovating the kitchen at the time and we were able to
accommodate the required wiring and plumbing needs. I love my coffee. Thanks
Sweet Marias for the great beans and fantastic service. Thanks list for some
great information over the years. Cheers

Malvene,
Nice auction score on the commercial machine. Is is an Aurelia like mine. We
use in our coffee shop. Real nice work horse. Sept. will be three years in
service. Keep your screens and group gaskets fresh and your pours will sing.
Did you get a nice filter system in place for it? Very important on these
single boilers.
Happy shots to you,,,
Cheers,
Joseph

Malvene,
I have had a Gene Cafe and a Fresh Roast but I always prefer the ole Bread
Machine/Heat Gun for roasting. So there are still some of us left.

Malvene,
Sounds like you have done well, very much like in the style but on a larger scale than my getting a broken commercial grinder that weighs 42 pounds, I can't remember the brand right now, for $1,19 a pound and found that the reason it did not run was that the power cord was broken. (sorry to extend my way of talking to my grand kids to the list) I more than doubled the cost by buying new burrs. Getting this commercial grade grinder made the second largest improvement in my coffee experience. Number one? Finding a source of great coffee beans, you got it, Sweet Maria's.

I'm still roasting, too, and reading the list. Still roasting stove-top. Not
the easiest set-up right now - this stove (been here since last Dec) has two
large burners, but the front one is dead. I think if i just replace that
front unit it'll be fine, but haven't done so, yet. And, of course, my knee
has been killing me for a couple of months, so roasting has been painful.
Did two roasts back to back the last time - was supposed to give some as a
gift, but that didn't turn out as planned - thankfully. They're so back I've
opted to drink tea some mornings, at least until I can handle standing
without massive pain, lol.
Sad fate for these SM beans (forget what variety, and at this point, it's
better that way).

The tornado closest to us in this really bad day hit about 35 miles north of us. This was Alabama's worst day for weather based deaths, and all we got was a nicely timed half inch of rain with so little wind that we didn't even have to close the windows.
My biggest coffee problem lately has been due to my buying too thick a gasket for the discharge port. I took out the upper screen for a while to get it to work. This morning I went ahead and removed the gasket and cleaned the area and reinserted the screen and was able to get it to work again with all its parts. That gives me coffee related content to justify this email.

I finally managed to get a couple of roasts in this weekend, Sunday after
dark. It was quite the full weekend with yardwork, Jr. Prom for the eldest,
date night with the wife, family dinner, etc, but I really wanted to get
these roasts in so after walking the dogs I hit the garage.
Since it was such a beautiful, warm weekend and I started roasting after
dark, I had company in the form of some sort of fly or gnats, I think maybe
March Flies. They were pestering me around the neck and face, drawn to the
lights in the garage, and also maybe the roasting smoke (I heard a report
this weekend from a friend who roasts in Florida with a Behmor that she was
besieged with love bugs while roasting.
I roasted a Tanzania PB to FC first, and I forgot to shake the drum to loose
the small beans and dust so some of the beans that fell through the grid got
a little charred but I think there was another source for an unusual
roasting smell due to the type of beans. I'm really curious to try these
and find out how they taste. I followed this with a Honduras bean to C+ and
these smelled really good, almost like Costa Rica beans after the roast.
The coffees I drank this weekend were vac pots of the El Salvador Manzano
processing experiment, Saturday a sweet pulp natural and Sunday the full
natural and this morning a Clever of the Wet Process. I really enjoy these
beans, though I've only tried them at City+.
Happy roasting and sipping.
-Chris.
