Topic: OT: Yard Sale Espresso Machine Help Request (14 msgs / 281 lines)
1) From: Robert Yoder
Greetings, Coffee-Folk,

I Found a distressed Espresso Machine and wonder if I can resurrect it. I was told that it blew fuses.

The Machine is labeled Italian Espress Moka Supreme, apparently is made by SAECO and was also sold under many different labels, one of which was LaPavoni Euromatic. It has a small brass boiler (similar to Miss Sylvia?) with three thermostats arranged in triangular pattern on top, and a portafilter in the 54mm Range.

I would love to learn about and restore this machine! I have it uncovered and have drawn a wiring diagram. There is a microswitch connected to the rotary Steam Valve which may assist in Steam Functions.

I'm starting to look through it, but realize that I may not have adequate information. For example, there is one lead which starts black shrink-wrap at the pump, has a swollen node under the shrink wrap, and terminates at the main power switch. I thought the swollen node was some kind of fuse, but discovered that it may be a Diode, because it conducts in only one direction. I know I know not.

Awhile ago, I seem to remember that someone had made some basic Espresso Machine Repairs and Knowledge available. Can anyone here direct me to assistance in figuring out and firing up this machine?

Thanks to all, Happy Memorial Day, and,

Happy Roasting,

I recommend getting yourself to a coffee forum where you can start a thread,
post pictures, and solicit advice. The ability to post pictures showing the
parts really helps and being able to go back and see the whole thread in a
forum and hit a wider audience should help too.
If you do this, post a link to the forum post with the pix here.
My 2 cents.

Robert,
Have you checked in with http://www.home-barista.com/There are some serious machine heads there that take the same joy as you do
in bringing the dead back to life.
Same goes for Baristaexchange.com
In fact their group is called Machine Heads.

Robert,
I had a LaPavoni Pub V given to me by a local business. It had been years
since it had seen service. Nice looking red machine.
I had a "dream" of restoring it. I think they were made in the '80s.
I woke up a few days later and looked in the mirror and asked my self when
that might be since I had just started a coffee business that I roast for.
I gave it to another new business that might restore it for their store
which I roast coffee for.
Kevin is the manager of that store. I don't think he has had one of those
mornings yet like I did with a mirror of reality staring back at him.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your reply. I fully understand that your priorities take priority(!)

As a default retiree without a daily business to run, however, my situation is different. Although I have no budget for it, I was retired by a little physical disability, so trouble-shooting and attempted ressurection of a machine is within the pale for me. Another thing is that I love to solve problems (not the national debt, or anything, but simple stuff that can fit on a bench).

So far, I have checked all the thermostats for resistance, the wiring, the water-level sensor, and the heater for resistance and isolation from the boiler-body. I was told that it blew fuses, so I set up an independently-protected circuit with a Kill-A-Watt Meter, Plugged in with all switches off, let it sit for awhile, then hit On. Right away the thing began to heat (IT'S FAST!). I Checked Pump Operations quickly, and learned how sensitive the machine is to adequate water supply. "Espresso" makes the pump run and it has gotten quieter as I've tested different functions. There is a cam on the Steam Valve Shaft that swiches on the Steam Circuit when the Valve is opened. This cam is located on the shaft by a set-screw, which I found loose. Maybe the cam was stuck in the Steam position and caused the heater to never turn off, causing the thing to overheat. The Steam function now seems also to work. I found it to be absolutely astonishingly filthy in the Shower Head, and I'm sure it needs a Gaggia Group Gasket and the gaskets for the steam wand. If anyone reading this has an idea where to find these, I'd love to hear it. (Some of the Parts Places are saying, frankly, that they won't carry SAECO any longer, but my impression is that this thing is pretty solidly-built), so no clue as to any marketing issues which might've arisen earlier.

Right now it has some CleanCaf in its boiler. Stuff coming out is quite remarkable (ugly), so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If it works, I will be happier than a pig in &*(*.

all the best, and,

Happy Roasting,

Robert,
ahh, end of day (EOD).
I have a chance to read and respond to your very detailed note. Great work.
Oh how I would love to have bench time again. The last real bench time was
when I was 19 yrs old.
I built a Knight kit shortwave tube radio. So much fun.
Sorry your disabled but it is a fine time to do what passions you like
coffee related projects. I'm so on that page.
As to espresso machine supplies and parts. I have had good luck withhttp://www.espressoparts.com/I would check their catalog online and give them a call if you don't see
what you need. They probably know who does if they don't.
Great team of folks working for him. The owners name is Terry.
Have fun and keep good notes and share them with us.
Cheers for now.

Hi, Julie,

An update: Parts guru called me (during his evening time in Pa) in quick response to an email query. He is absolutely remarkably knowledgeable, gracious, and friendly. As he reported: he loves his job. This is perhaps one of the best service operations I've ever experienced, and all for what will possibly amount to a low-dollar transaction.

I must say that partsguru is a stand-out and thank you for your recommendation. My favorite things in life (really) are excellence and effort tied together. It's where we shine and makes me proud of ourselves, for a moment. This is a very good internet Espresso Machine repair source!

Thanks again!
