All,

Anyone have experience with Syd and Jerry's roaster? Tim O'Connor had recommend I check it out. He said it was one of the best.

All,

After reading the info on the website I realized that it's a fully automatic machine with only roast level selectable. That might be very easy, but for that price I want manual! ;)

I wonder if they have more manual controls available. But at that price a Roaster Corp is also in for choosing?

Over the years, it's been marketed on a number of different names: coffee
kinetics, sonofresco, syd & jerry's. I don't have a lot of experience with
them, but can tell you the take beans from green to brown.http://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.coffeekinetics.shtmlcheers,

I use Sonofresco & Hottop.
They both have their use.
Hottop is great across the board, but the Sonofresco is better at either
very light or very dark roasts.
Sono takes much more finessing - additional blower on the output & varying
the starting qty.
I wouldn't want to be without either one.

Very early in my home roasting Journey I "thought" it was a dream roaster.
Nope. It's target market is coffee shops that want to roast their own but
don't want to learn to roast. Like they say, anyone easily trained in
minutes to push the button (and let it do it's thing).
And not saying it doesn't do a "decent" job. Just no way to really make
beans sing.
It's easy to turn beans brown, it's a lifetime Journey to learn to make
beans sing.
A USRC .5k will run a bit more, like $1-1.5k more :) Also be built much more
durable and give you full roast control.

Mike,

Do used USRC .5k's come up on the market at times? If yes, what would be a good place to keep an eye out?

Thanx,

I've never seen a used USRC .5k for sale. Imagine either a person with one
would have to die and their inheritors not want it, or become extremely
totally irrevocably financially destitute. For example when I move up from
my USRC 3k, won't be selling it but rather continue using it for smaller
batch elite coffees. Likely move it to one of our other Coffeehouse
locations spreading the "roaster bling" around, while new bigger roaster
used for main bigger production runs. And IF I'd started with a .5k instead
of 3k wouldn't sell it either, be like selling one of your children :) Ok,
would keep to be used as design intended, high quality profiling capable
sample roaster.
