Topic: too hot to roast (7 msgs / 188 lines)
1) From: Mike Chester
Even though the outside temp is about 100, I decided to roast coffee today using my CCR Hottop. The first 4 batches went fine, but on the fifth which was the last of my Panama Gesha that I have been carefully preserving, my computer crashed due to the heat. The beans were trapped in the roaster, just sitting in the hot drum until I could get the computer running again. I got it going and dumped the beans that were hot, but still green. I blew cool air into the laptop. ( It sits on a laptop cooler, but still overheated) until I got it running again. I re-started the roast, but it crashed again. I again cooled the computer enough to dump the beans. They are still green, but I fear that they will never be the same. I currently have my laptop inside sitting on an air conditioner vent. This had to happen with my rarest beans, not when I was roasting French roast for my daughter. She would never have known the difference if I had to re-start those roasts.
I am not asking anything, just venting my frustration. Sorry.

No, not the Geisha... I understand your frustration.
I had only a half pound of the Panama Geisha and thought I'd roasted it
well, but the last bit I was saving was on the sour side so I think I didn't
take it quite far enough through first crack. I'd imagine that your beans
are worse off, not even getting a glimmer of first and not being able to
complete the roast.
It always seems to happen when the stakes are high.

Mr. Chester is using a CCR HotTop, anything but stock. The problem was with
the laptop not the HotTop. I can attest and confirm a CCR HotTop is quite
capable of doing back to back roasts non-stop 6 to 16 hour sessions day
after day for months. Bean there done that with two of 'em simultaneously
while waiting for my USRC 3k to be built back in '07. And Mr. Chester is the
current owner using one of those to highly used and abused CCR HotTops I
hammered for four months daily without a hiccup.
Mike, hope you're able to salvage your last Esmeralda! Obviously you'll give
it a go. I'd try hitting it hard with a high charge temp to compensate for
already partial roast, then slam the brakes approaching 1st for normal
finish.

Mike McK, you may be right about yours, but I have a CCR HotTop and burnt up the fusable link as I said.
Good luck, Mike Chester.

I burned out the fuseable link last year. It was odd as miKe mentioned, he
hammered the one I have very hard without a problem. Mine burned out during
a routine roast session. It has been removed from my machine and is not a
concern any more. Like miKe said, the problem was in the laptop, not the
CCR Hottop. I finished the roast and the beans look fine, but I don't know
how they will taste. It was over 100 degrees here today so the failure of
the laptop was not that surprising. After cooling the laptop, I roasted 5
more batches without a problem.
