Winer,
I got you by a few years and I can't wait to carry them big bags to the
roaster just for the smell of it. I'm looking forward toI seeing the
delivery truck with 10 pallets. I dream of Santa pulling a Sleigh with a
Ton of Toms best small lots.
MiKe? where is your help from south of the border? I hear there is some
cheep labor over in Oregon? ;^).
Seems with this economy there should be some muscle for hire to move them
sweet smelling bags of yours.
I give my customers coffee credit if they help me move them greens in from
the truck.

miKe,
I recall a few years ago, just after I joined this list, one of the
first posts i saw was when you had been on vacation somewhere and had
returned to Houston, I think it was, and were happy to get back to
your homeroaster and Miss Silvia. It's hard to imagine that roasting
has taken you to where you are today.

Brian,
miKe M. a serious mentor of mine bleeds coffee in his sleep. I have no
doubt in my my mind that when he sleeps those are not sheep jumping over a
fence.
Back when you refer to, I discovered miKe and realized I was afflicted with
the same disorder. I have long since embraced the "Dark Side". "My" dreams
consist of a cross between the next 5 star exotic green that Tom is cupping
somewhere I long to be, to my nightmare fantasy of my recent right arm
(from the elbow down) prosthetic bottomless portafilter that folks comes
from miles around just to have me make them an espresso with it.
Sounds like we will see you on this far side of black gold one day.

My daughter is getting married in the spring. She's decided that their
money is better spent on a week long destination wedding/vacation on a
gorgeous island for family members & close friends, rather than spend the
same (or more) for 150 acquaintances at a venue near here.
So here I am, mother of the bride, first wedding of any of my kids... and
I'm thinking... how am I going to get my greens past customs w/out any
hitches??? and can I get the right pan/stove setup to roast...
I admit I have a problem... :D Priorities, priorities...

Lynne,
There's a simple solution. Choose an island that has coffee plantations. Then you can bring the excess greens back home with you.

I'm thinking plan ahead, and get the address of the resort you're staying
at, order (via internet) a cast iron skillet, propane camp stove, and a
pound or two of Tom's greens and have em' shipped to your hotel or cabin or
whatever. Let the shipping companies deal with customs, while you travel
worry free. That's my 2 cents.
:)

10) From: kevin creason
I agree with Jon - buy local greens when you are on the islands! Don't
threaten their coffee crops, even though the likelihood of introducing
something is low, just buy local. I was in Maui a week last year and I
did suffer with sub-standard coffee, but I found some good spots that
I frequented more often.

Ha! Good idea - only problem, the prospective bride & groom have already
chosen the island. ;-) Some nerve, what with it being their wedding & all.
It's going to be held on the Isla Mejeres. I've been assured that after we
land at the airport, our cabs will whisk us away to the ferry, so we'll be
perfectly safe. You know, I need to give out the usual amount of Italian
mother-worry. I don't really feel very Italian, but some of the genes
stuck, just the same. Like with food. And coffee.
Haven't even had much time to research it, yet (the usual family crisis
here & there - and I've been trying to figure out a special but affordable
gift for them), but it doesn't look like there's any coffee plantations
there. If there *was* - I'd be in my glory.

Sorry, spelling error: Isla Mujeres. I've had so many things to resolve
here, it hasn't all sunk in yet!
I'm doing a search right now - if anyone knows anything about this little
bit of paradise, please share!

I doubt that a little bit of green coffee will be an issue Lynne. Spending
as much time on this list as I have, Tom has helped me understand that the
beans can't threaten anyone's crops because they can not grow.
I would just contact customs and present the case or there is the old way
of just doing the "Blond" thing, ;^) like I do all the time and pack them
up like Vitamins and see what happens and go with the local green coffee if
there is any. Or Plan C or D, Just enjoy yourself, the wedding, the local
food and why not, the local coffee too.
What ever you do have the time of your life like it's your daughters 1st
and last wedding.
Happy holidays to you and yours Lynne.

Hi Lynne,
Not coffee related, but you struck a note with me when you said the island.
Yes, me and C have been there, quite a while ago when we used to vacation
in Cancuun. It is a modest boat ride from there, and the Isla is very
rustic IIRC. The mexican blankets were awesome, and we still have some of
them. Love the riotous colors and they are much softer than the ones back
on the mainland. It did not have an airport when we went there, but if it
is anything like when we visited I am sure you will have a great time.
Oooooo.... I guess I don't have to tell you not to drink the water huh? Not
even ice cubes in your beverage. Better safe than sorry.
We had a friend who got sick from a salad where they had washed the lettuce
with local water. Not really trying to scare, this is how we take care on
mainland Mexico, perhaps the isla is better. Hope so.
Best,
PeterZ

Good suggestions, Joseph!
I think I'll just forgo my own coffee for the duration. I'd have to find a
setup where I can roast, and I think that's too much trouble, considering
the occasion.
I finally got around to doing a bit of research - not only is the island
gorgeous, but it seems to be a foodie-paradise! I think I'll eat a years
worth of fish in the week I'm there. :D

Oh, thanks so much, Peter! Great to hear fr someone who's been there. From
what I was reading (and seeing fr photos), it's going to be fantastic.
Did you & your love follow through with your plans to move to MA (for
others on the list, they over to say hi, and we shared some coffee &
biscotti when they were in the area (more than a year ago, right)? I moved
away from my apt on the ocean - much happier w/easy access to Cambridge &
Boston.
I'm finally starting to get excited about her wedding & our very special
celebration. I'm going to get to see some of her friends who I haven't seen
since they were little - can't wait!
