Hello everyone. Tune into our Ustream page tomorrow (Friday 1/13/2012) at
Noon PST to watch and/or participate in Tom's live, interactive broadcast
where he will go into detail about cupping roast levels. Viewers will be
able to participate in a live chat. It's our first time doing this so try
not to make fun of us as we work out the kinks. If it goes smooth, you can
expect more live broadcasts in the future. Here's the link for out Ustream
page...http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sweet-marias--

It's a sort of trial run, so we aren't expecting too much the first
time. Hopefully it will be informative.

Yes, perfect timing, I was planning on going to the free *bucks
cupping of their new "Blonde" roast compared to their other roasts
tomorrow morning. Then I can come back and learn what a "Blonde" roast
is?!?!

Tom what a fantastic experience! Really learned a lot here being able to
watch, listen and learn at the same time. Especially interested in your
coffee/water ratio (7gr to 1/2 cup) and a discussion of the psychology of
cupping. (Re:coffe tastes.. when I brush in the morning before my first cup,
I don't use toothpaste.)
And yes, the ads are very distracting.. Too bad about the time delay or
'tweeting' the questions might have worked.

I really enjoyed the show, but I came away with a better understanding of how
limiting home roasters are. The time differences in the mid range of roast
levels are so small that it's just about impossible to get precisely what you
want, especially because the Behmor doesn't stop the roasting process very
quickly after the cooling button is pressed. I didn't see any ads, thanks to
Adblock Plus.

I'll try to make this short. I was watching the replay (thanks) and I
know of two other people who do live shows that also are in the ustream
pickle with ads. They actually switched to justin.tv
I personally don't know how successful that has been, but I'd recommend
contacting them via phone or e-mail and just ask how things have been
going. I'd hate for you to stop doing these because the technology is
getting in the way. Justin is the guy's name, and he can be found at http://coachradio.tvDustin

Joel,
Glad you tuned in for the broadcast, and thank you for the feedback.
I think you need to imagine that you aren't a "home roaster", but rather a
novice coffee roaster, looking to accumulate knowledge. That is how I view
myself as I've been working at Sweet Maria's for a few years, but have much
to learn. I enjoy using cheapo air popcorn poppers, a Behmor, and a Probat.
The fun thing about roasting coffee yourself is being involved in the
process. If you are disatisfied with the cooling cycle on the Behmor (which
I too am less than pleased with) then bypass it, grab some potholders and
pull the cylinder out and cool the beans by shaking them around outside.
Try other methods of roasting. The wonderful thing about roasting is no
one has the "right" answer. Each individual is empowered to examine, try
different workarounds, and enjoy the process of roasting coffee. Do sample
roasters manufactured by German companies produce better results than "home
roasters" built by factories in China? It depends who's operating the
equipment and how well they understand the roaster they are using.
Best,
Josh

Thanks Terry and others for feedback and tips. We will definitely
keep doing this, and announce it well in advance. I think we will
pick narrower topics too. And I want to make this idea actually
DEPEND on interaction, so it is not someone talking at you all. There
is so much experience out there ...

Tom, I was not able to see it live (at work), but just finished viewing it
earlier this morning. I have a question about the grind. I have a Zass
grinder and, after looking at your grounded mounds (somewhere around the 22
1/2 minute mark), I am wondering if I am grinding much too fine for my cup.
In the video, there appears to be some, looks to me like fairly large,
coffee grounds scattered in front of the mounds of ground coffee. If those
are, in fact, single pieces of grounds, is that the typical size that you
normally grind?
Looking forward to more of your informational videos.

I watched it and thought it was great! Really cool to see Tom and see
him working his magic.
2 suggestions:
- do a dedicated chat room to go with the video, don't rely on ustream
for theirs... you can easily set up a free chat room somewhere like http://www.mibbit.com.Also justin.tv may be a better choice for you
than ustream as someone suggested.
- keep the videos! This is a perfect podcast. You can actually drive a
lot of traffic to your website and make sales if you upload good content
like that, and name it properly. As far as I know there is no current,
good, coffee video podcast right now. This also provides a way for
people to subscribe to them, watch them after the fact and so on.
I would be happy to help with any tech issues you may have if needed,
just shoot me an email.
Yours,
Jeremy
