Topic: What would you do if your favorite roaster cleaner (13 msgs / 220 lines)
1) From: Seth Grandeau
The Environmental Working Group (the nice people who take all the fun
out of sunscreen) have just released their 2012 Hall of Shame for
cleaning products, due to their dangerous chemical content. And who
is on the top of the list? None other then our beloved Simple Green.

I googled EWG and found lots of bad press for them....they may be pushing their own agenda and fudging the facts...

Hi,
Anything better than what CCF comes up with. In these days you almost have
to produce your own scientific knowledge about anything since all others
have more or less hidden agendas, it takes time away from the roasting.

I have to disagree. EWG is highly respected, including by
manufacturers. It has been a trusted source for a very long time. Its
no wonder there is bad press. There's much more good press! Its easy
to use and has been helpful without being cumbersome to use.

I always thought simple green just smelled nasty and stopped using it for
that reason alone. It also seemed to take forever to get the smell out of
the Behmor.

Believe it or not, good old fashioned Joy dish soap and a very little
elbow grease. It work just as well as Simple Green for me.

I have had good success cleaning with denatured alcohol.I wet the
surfaces let it dry, then come back with wags and q tips also wet with
the alcohol. Parts that I take off I soak in hot soapy water then
place in the put in the dishwasher and run it on the heavy cycle.

I also despise the odor of simple green. I use damp baking soda, works like a charm!

I always run a 1/2#, P1 cleaning cycle after using Simple Green, and I
never noticed a smell afterwards. I hope that's a high enough
temperature to burn off any chemicals. I also only use SG on the
roaster and chaff tray, never on the drum.

In the Quest I clean the fan and chaff area by scraping and brushing
regularly. I clean the drum by running up the temperature to 550f for 20-30
mins. So I use no cleaning compounds, yucky junk
