Rob, welcome to the fun house.
After 20+ years of drinking dark roasted Peet's (all of Peet's is dark
roasted--they're just different degrees of dark) I've discovered after less
than four months of roasting my own that I definitely prefer lighter
roasted coffees. My favorite so far has been Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, about
which I recently posted to the list.
So, I wouldn't worry too much about what you have liked as being what you
will like, not that that isn't a reasonable jumping off point! Instead, if
I might suggest, order a number of 1# bags of coffees that:
         (1) sound appealing to you, and
         (2) have different suggested roast profiles
and go from there. I found the half-pound sampler packs too small to make
a judgement.
The multitude of choices can be daunting. But remember: courage is not
being without fear; it is doing while having fear. (Homily of the day
brought to you by Coffee God Daily Sermons, Inc.)
Have fun!
