Tim--have fun in SC, but bear in mind that the SC
coffee roasting company's coffee has gone
downhill since the earthquake (yes, I'm talking
about 13 years ago). Their roaster who took the
Malabar so light no longer works there, and the
times I've tried it since '89 haven't measured
up. There is a stellar coffee shop on a side
street (Union St.) called Jahva House which, IMO,
serves the best coffee in town. From the north
end of the mall (clock tower end), take the
walkway past Benten Sushi, past the parking
structure, across the street, halfway down the
block.
Cheers,
Paul

Actually, I'm "only" going to Santa Cruz because my brother, who lives
there, is taking me to Jazz at the Aquarium in Monterey; I also have to
stop in at Santa Clara University sometime early this month, and it's
easier to combine trips.

I've only been there once, and the espresso I had was not that great, but
I figured that they deserved another chance.

AFAIK, they do their roasting in Watsonville, but I don't know if that
matters...

I'll have to look for that one. So far, I've prefered The Ugly Mug in
Soquel and have gotten mixed results (barista-dependant) at Aptos Coffee
Roasing Co. Coffeetopia has decent coffee, but I didn't try their
espresso, and Surf City Coffee was ok. Recently, I've been going to
Peets, though there's a place on North Pacific that I forget the name of
that looked like it might have been ok; haven't tried them yet.
