I had roasted some Mexican La Pluma upon returning from Mexico the other =
night. Last night I tried a cup - and spit it out. That was absolutely =
the worst taste I've had the displeasure of experiencing in a long =
while. So I dumped it and roasted another small batch. It too turned =
out to be horrible. I took the roast to a rolling second crack and then =
cooled it in a frozen stainless steel bowl. I then let it rest for 24 =
hours and tried it. AWFUL! Thinking something might have gone wrong =
with the Mighty SM5K I did a complete cleaning and opened a vacuum =
sealed bag of huehuetenango and ran it through the drill - perfect! =
Wonderful cup... OK - vacuumed out the grinder and put in the La Pluma - =
GARBAGE!!
What happened?
You know, Friday nights and Saturdays used to be my favorite days on =
this list. Lots of great posts and funny stuff. I'm hoping to see it =
that way again - soon.

Charlie,
I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary about the beans before or
after the roast. BUT it sure would qualify for stink bean! It was really a
terrible cup. Maybe I'll do one more roast before I ship the rest up to my
son. And rest assured that my beans come from the quality controlled Sweet
Marias. I did bring some back up from Mexico a month or so back but that
stuff is all history. I do 100% of my beaning with Tom & Maria - a lesson I
learned the hard way :O)
John - Hoping Christmas brings a 1/2 pound roaster - but then I'm really
hoping it comes for my birthday in August.

John, you are an experienced roaster so it can't be anything that you
did (that any of us wouldn't have done, anyway). Maybe you ought to send
some back to Tom and see if he could use the information he gets from it
to help his QC. He is a careful man so if multiple roasts of the same
bean batch are wrong he's going to want to know it.

That makes good sense. I'll vacupack some of it for his review. I'm
really at a loss to explain this one.
The lot was received in two 2# bags and I haven't opened the second -
but think I will before I do anything else.
Thanks for the thought Ted.
John - back to the roaster :O)
