OK - first roast - big get aquainted party. The Hot Top established that it
needs to be treated with respect. Don't handle it any more than you would
your iron or your waffle iron (and some early toasters). Initial
impression: runs incredibly quiet. Even the beeps are unobtrusive
(considering that the operator will be attentive).
Second roast. A setting of 5 seems a bit light for anything other than a
brewed cup. The Friajanes 100% Bourbon which has lots of chaff, made it
with almost no smoke. The exhaust fan could keep up with it on the lowest
setting. There was a metal scraping sound that developed during the second
roast which turned out to be 32 beans in the chaff tray - running on the
edge of the drum. Now to figure how they got in the tray and that mystery
should be solved.
Third roast. I'm using Guatemalan Huehuetenango Finca El Injerto 02'
because it is one of the most forgiving beans, and it is ready to drink
quickly and I can get a shot or two from it tonight. I've just started it
at a setting of 6.
Because of the smoke from the first "seasoning" roast, I have the doors and
windows open, so the ambient is a comfortable 82 degrees.
Be back in 28 minutes.
