I have included a link to an article from today's Saint Petersburg Times
which discusses the plight of many Latin American coffee farmers. I thought
some of you might be interested in reading it. http://www.sptimes.com/2002/08/11/Worldandnation/Waking_up_to_world_co.shtmlHave a great Sunday!

 "The Link To Nowhere"
Sounds like a Star Trek movie.

Yep, I do Star Trek too. Kind of like the Kona I am drinking this morning.
With all the Alp discussions I decided to get mine out of the shipping box
and give it one more try. Weighed out exactly 8 oz. of Kona, poured it in the
drum, set the timer and hit the warp 15 button.
Everything went smoothly and first crack began at about 12 minutes. At about
12:45 and most of the way through first crack the heater cut out. It didn't
go to cool, the heater just quit. Probably just some whacky thermal over-ride
in there not functioning properly, but sure messed up the Kona (again). I did
follow up with a 7 oz. batch of Mexican that finished just fine, but that was
only 7 ounces in my 1/2 pound machine.
Maybe a HotTop for Christmas. The Alp is back in the shipping box.

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
That article reads more like a "melt-down" than a crisis. The growers
get paid a third of what they used to get while the resellers enjoy what
must record coffee profits. Truly a sorry state indeed and thanks
sharing the link to this story.
