Dear Gov. David Hollamby,
Greetings from the United States of America. As I am writing this e-mail, I
am enjoying a fine cup of St. Helena coffee, Blueman's Estate. I am sending
this email to give you an outsiders perspective on one of the greatest
assets of your small isolated Island. I wonder if you realize how fantastic
the coffee is from your island? I literally micro-roast and prepare all of
my own coffees because I am so fussy about my coffee. Some call it a hobby,
my wife calls it an obsession. I have sampled coffees from all over the
world, and none compares to St. Helena. This year I was able to obtain
coffee from four of the estates, and I couldn't believe that I could tell a
difference. However, micro-climates do make a difference. It isn't just my
opinion, but the opinion of many (and I believe almost all who have tried
your wonderful coffee) that it is either the best or one of the best in the
world. I share this to let you know, I am not just tooting my own horn.
The roaster group that I belong to has members all over the world. I just
wonder if you know what a rare and wonderful commodity you possess that
isn't found anywhere else in the world? The point I am so passionately try
to convey is that St. Helena coffee has no equal or peer! Now to the point
of my e-mail. I was heartbroken when I heard from David Henry (through my
group) that 68% of the coffee went to waste because not enough workers could
be found harvest it. Then I read that unemployment is high on the Island
and there are no jobs! It doesn't make sense to me that here is a gem of a
coffee, the best in the world, and most of it goes to rot on the ground. I
urge you as an outsider who paid more for St. Helena than any other coffee
because it is worth it, to convey to your people that they have something
special that nobody else has to offer the world! I would urge you to assist
in any way possible the complete harvest of all the wonderful coffee from
your island.
Yours truly,
Rev. Les Albjerg, Chaplain

Thanks for sharing that Les. I'll send David a note of thanks too. It's a
shame what some people do to their fellow man. Definitely don't want him
giving up on growing & nurturing fantastic St. Helena coffee! Now some of us
really know reasons why it cost so much more. Not just remote location
that's for sure. Wanton destruction, careless destructive handling by others
out of his control, reneging insurance companies, Government corruption...

Geese, what does water fowl have to do with this? :-}
Is this the REAL reason why SH is so expensive (like Kopi)?
Seriously, that kind of purposeful damage and negligence is really
infuriating. I hope he makes it, but it is often almost impossible to
overcome those kind of obstacles.

So what has happened to St. Helena coffee? I haven't seen anything
about it in years and Google doesn't turn up any recent information.

The "supplier", as I recall, sold Tom a bag(s) of crap, triage or worse, and
that was the end of it around these parts. Probably too expensive to produce
a profitable crop.
Hope this helps.
