Topic: Is there an easy tweak? (31 lines)
1) From: Gary Zimmerman
I'm traveling. I have a hotel room that includes an electric drip coffee
maker. Today, just for curiosity, I ran some water through the machine
with no coffee, to measure the water temp. I tried measuring in the
basket, but it was difficult to hit the outflowing stream with my
thermometer stem. It looked to be about 180.
So after the carafe was filled with hot water, I checked the temp there. (I
put a plate under the carafe to protect it from the hot plate
underneath.) The water was a little below 180. No wonder these things in
hotel rooms often make horrid coffee.
Do any of you tinkerers on the list know of a quick and fairly easy tweak
to these types of machines that would up the exit temp of the water? Would
it help to start with water from the hot tap instead of the cold? (I know
there are more impurities in the hot water, but it might be preferable, in
order to get the temp up.)
Any other tweak would need to be simple - something I could do in my room
without tearing the machine apart and without elaborate tools. May be a
lost cause, but it would save me from bringing a hot pot and Melitta filter
with me when I travel.
Thanks.
