Another machine to consider might be the Saeco Maestro, available on eBay
for around $35. It's a small pump machine, has a nice, heavy portafilter
and a brass (though small), boiler. I have found it to be a good machine to
learn on, and I can pull good--if not the occasional great--shot from it.
Chris Beck developed a steaming technique that works well and really extends
the steaming capabilities of the small boiler. It came highly recommended
by a number of people on this list, and if you do a search on alt.coffee,
you'll find more information. Email me off-list if you want the name and
ebay ID of the vendor. He doesn't always have one listed, but can put one
up for you if you ask.
As to a grinder, I bought a Solis Maestro and it works fine with this
machine. But, if I had it to do over, I'd have gotten a Rocky, the budget
Innova was not out when I bought my grinder. At the time, it seemed like
major overkill for my $35 machine but when I do upgrade I'm not sure that
the Solis will still do the job.
Have fun,
C.

Good point, Cheryl. You will get far superior espresso with the Saeco Maestro machine and a Rocky than with a Silvia and the Solis grinder. If you are going to upgrade, get the Rocky first. The Saeco machines WITHOUT the crema 'enhancing' portafilter really are quite good. The Saeco Idea (*not* the Super Idea) is another one to look for. The Super has the crema faking portafilter.
I thought the Saeco Maestro was some sort of joke when Gonzo first dropped it off for me to try out. Ha! The Saeco had the last laugh. Yeah, it's got a really small reservoir and a joke of a drip tray, but it has the goods where it counts - good boiler (if small) and portafilter, and the same pump as the Silvia.
