OK, I didn't have to do this, but maybe it will serve as a reminder to
some other folks on the list.
You remember I complained about the lousy tasting CR Terrazu Finca La
Diamonde 02' I did admit that it must be me, because Tom's cupping was
way different than my experience. I tried roasting at a WIDE variety of
finishes. All bad.
We did a roast of my standby (Guat. Huehue) and IT was really bad! Hmmm
must be the HotTop - must be doing something bad. Nope! I fired up the
FR+ and it produced bad. OK - now I know its the brewing method - but I
just cleaned it recently. ..... All but the boiler! I dropped in the
tablet and let it work through the system. Flushed it.. .
Hey - this CRT La Diamonde is great stuff!! So now I have a reminder to
clean the boiler every three months. You would not have believed the
calcium that kicked out of that thin!! I'm amazed we could swallow.
John - loving my stuff again - even the CRT LD!

I'll chime in - unsolicited, I know - to say that those of you using a
thermometer to ensure proper brewing temperature should periodically calibrate.
I once bought a new tea kettle because I thought there must be some
impurity or something growing in my old one. It had gradually started
giving me sour tasting coffee for all varieties. I tried cleaning it well,
but that didn't seem to help.
After getting the new kettle, I remembered to check my thermometer, and
sure enough, it had drifted quite badly. It turns out I had been brewing
at well below the 200F I usually use. After I recalibrated the
thermometer, suddenly all my coffee tasted great again. D'oh! Did I feel
dumb. Nice tea kettle though.

What kind (brand) of tablet did you use to clean the boiler John? My SL-90
needs it pretty bad and not quite sure what is safe to use. Perfect timing
since my next SM order is due in Clearwater Monday.
Thanks,
Terry

Solis included a couple of (large) tablets of Solitabs with the machine.
Tom & Maria added a package of Cleancaf from Urnex. I had already used
the Cleancaf but didn't reorder, all I had was the Solitabs and used
them - with great results.
