Topic: Exothermic Reactions (17 lines)
1) From: Dan Bollinger
The Hobbie & Eggers article had referred to a Raemy & Lambelet article about
exothermic reactions. I went to the U and copied it. The copies are not
very good (library xeroxes) so I typed out the important stuff including the
graphs and posted this online at:
www.claycritters.com/coffee/raemy-lambelet.htm
This article proves coffee has an exothermic reaction while roasting. In
fact, there are two distinct reaction types, one with soluble carbohydrates
and another of non-soluble matter. The heat produced is significant, 60-100
calories per gram of coffee, enough that the authors warn of spontaneous
combustion. Dan
