Topic: Buying a roaster (4 msgs / 83 lines)

After 5+ years of roasting with a modified Poppery II, I want to get a new roaster. Since I am the only coffee drinker in the house and don't require a big roaster, I was looking at the Fresh Roast Plus and the Caffe Rosto.
Tom recommends the Rosto for people that prefer darker roasts. I tend to roast lighter - usually at or just before second crack. Does the Rosto work well for these types of roasts, or should I get the Fresh Roast, or should I wait for the new HWP? Thanks,
Randy

Randy,

I've used the Rosto since last January, roasting just as you prefer
(just before or into second crack) and have found it to be excellent.
You need to be involved with the roast - rocking is almost a requirement
- but you'll get good results.

The new HWP sounds good, but I'd wait until a few people had posted some
experiences with it before laying out any money. All of these
manufacturers have had their share of problems with their roasters when
first released and seem to need some time to sort out bugs.

Roy,
I own a FR and FR+ and love them both, but I have a feeling the new HWP
is going to be a killer roaster. They've been working on it long enough that
it should be pretty stable when they release it. I'd sure hang on for the
HWP.
John - roasting with anything hot: Wok, steel fry pan, FR, FR+, Cafferosto,
and the almost designed HotTop
