Hey Mike, do you think, that if you had a was to agitate the beans? and =
mabey a ramp up, to slow things down?Of course we could waste alot of =
greens experimenting, Need some Viet rostbusta to use, cost would be =
less, and throwing them in the can wouldn't hurt as much. :O)

After the 'Smiles Coffee' fiasco I decided to see what would happen
microwaving true coffee greens. (rather than the 'Smiles' pre-roasted
microwave heated stuff).
I put 3oz greens in a covered glass microwave safe bowl. (cover on loosely
at angel) Started nuking on high, heard what sounded like 1st cracks
starting 'round 1:30 then shortly after sounded like some 2nd's kicked in
with the 1st's. By 2:50 smoke was starting to billow so shut down! Beans
ranged from green to black. Another down the drain experiment! Oh, this was
with a 1100w microwave with carousel.
Too bad it didn't work. Anyone figures out how to really roast coffee with a
microwave and that would be great for many vacations! Maybe using lower
power. Me thinks I seriously ought to spend some time learning to stovetop
coffee roast... Hey, it was a thought!:-)

pre-nuke?
Yup, opened two "unroasted" packs up after the 'wonderful' "roasting"
experience. 'Unroasted' looked just like a medium / light full city roast.

that makes sense, given the descriptions from those who 'roasted'. thank you
for the response.

You know, I wonder if maybe coffee roasting in the microwave can indeed
be done. I've been reading on both smelting metal like lead in the
microwave and a plasma-ball experiment in the microwave (both properly
set up in specially designed containment vessels so as not to damage the
microwave) - that leads me to wonder if perhaps a proper device could
possibly be created that could raise the temps to proper roasting
levels...I'll have to experiment with that. Microwaves can react with
graphite and other materials to generate a *lot* of heat - over 1k
degrees - surely something less extreme and smartly designed would allow
you to plop in, say, a 1/2 pound of beans, hit the timer for a few
minutes and presto - roasted coffee - have to figure out a way to
seperate chaff and all that - but it's possible. Certainly *not* those
cheapy bag "roasters".
Cheers,
Mike

Not that I wound want to pursue it, but isn't this something like actual
fraud on Smiles' part?

And not that I'd want to be put in the position of defending Smiles', but
their website is quite specific, if you read the details of their process,
that the coffee is partially roasted before packaging, "to expand the bean
and remove the chaff." This would make it pretty clear that the coffee has
already gone through first crack before packaging.

It looks like these folks are perpetuating a fraud. They are not
really letting people home roast, they let people warm up pre-roasted
beans in a package and think they roasted them. Home roasting is
getting a good reputation because of the kinds of experiences people on
his list have with it and these scum are trying to cash in on it. This
cannot be good for the home roasting movement. Nor for businesses like
Tom and Maria's where the people work hard to provide good products and
services that are the very foundation of this well deserved good
reputation. If someone is motivated to try home roasting and sees this
fraud as the easiest way to try it, they will not bother to try the
real stuff. I don't know what to do about it but it pisses me off.

the whole mentality around micro waving for many people is the time it can
save you
like popcorn in 3 minutes as opposed to 6.............duh.............
and that all the mess is in the bag so you don't have to wash A POT!!!!
the very same people might also buy a coca cola when they don't have the 3
minutes for the micro coffee-(yuk) to get their caffeine on the fly-
coca cola is purported to be the no#1 caffeine alternative in the United
States
This stuff has to create its own hybrid market
the nonsense sometimes of free enterprise
and then cater to those who would not be able to also sit down like I am
right now and share in the multi cultural ongoing dialogue that keeps me
from removing my name from this very active site.............
I am actually happy that the microwave crowd can pacify themselves yet
again with a low brainer alternative
happy happy happy
and Tom and Maria of course can continue to build a first class business on
"word of mouth" that we can all beam about............
I am also happy I found this site first!!!!
And I love my fresh coffee
and that taste in my mouth that it leaves.........
happy happy happy
