Topic: Water, one more time (mostly) (34 lines)
1) From: Owen Davies
After the appalling coffee I reported yesterday, we went
out and replenished our supply of Deer Park Natural Spring
Water, the only stuff we can get in this part of Florida that
doesn't arrive tasting of the plastic it came in. This morning,
there is none of the bitter, almost metallic flavor that had
us pouring it down the sink yesterday. Given the *$ pre-
ground beans, it has a way to go, but at least we'll survive
until I get some skill at roasting our own.
I'm not surprised that the water can alter the flavor of the
coffee--how could it not?--but the magnitude of the change
amazes me. The two batches we had yesterday, using
Zephyrhill's distilled water, my wife's preferred drinking
water, were toxic waste. This morning's coffee was not
bad at all.
Now if only I can remember to buy a timer, so that the
steeping is better controlled.
Minor aside: We happened to stop at the coffee bar in
Border's (a desperation measure!) and found that they had
a half-price sale on all their Bodum products. We wound
up with an 8-tasse Bodum for $5. It's not as nice as the
Chambord, but at that price it will do for a couple of extra
cups during the day. Wouldn't surprise me if other Border's
are having the same close-out.
