Topic: No greens from Venezuela? (3 msgs / 71 lines)
1) From: Darren Conrad
I have a friend whose wife is from Venezuela and they usually take a trip there
every year or so. When he returns, he usually has a suitcase JAMMED full of
coffee purchased there. I am also the lucky recipient of some of this and find
that it's very full bodied and flavorful.
Tom and Maria offer green beans from South America, but Venezuela is absent
from the list. Are there no decent growers available in this region?

Venezuelan coffee is a rarity in the United States. As previous threads have
proven, most of you are familiar with the difficult economics of the coffee
trade. Add to this the strange economic history of Venezuela in the 20th
century. Booming oil prices (Venezuela is a founder of OPEC and is one of
the United States' top oil suppliers) changed the wage structure there
drastically, making it difficult to find workers for the labor-intensive
production process. In addition to fine coffee, Venezuela once was the home
of the world's best cacao -- the basis of cocoa. Now, the two industries are
minor and world prices make their rejuvenation unlikely for now. Most coffee
stays in-country.
That's an over-simplified explanation. The important answer is: Nope, you're
not likely to find it here.

fondly remembers picking coffee beans along the roadside outside Merida,

Thanks for the scoop M.G. - this certainly explains why I haven't seen this
coffee around. It's a shame, really because it is great coffee. It would be
even better if I could get fresh roast because my friend usually brings me foil
wrapped and pre-ground coffee.
