Couple of weeks ago, somebody mentioned that the Z&D roaster would be
sold at The Great Indoors (TGI) & I volunteered to check it out.
Had to go the mall this AM for a sale item at Sears & stopped in at
TGI.
Now, I have actually seen and touched the new Z&D roaster. Read some
of the literature quickly. Roasts "about 5 oz." Didn't say by
weight or volume. Just "fill to the line "kind of measurement. Don't
think there was a measuring cup included.
The roaster is sort of pretty. Looks like the way it controls smoke is
by recycling the air/smoke. The top (with gaskets) fits snuggly on
the roasting cylinder/chaff cup. There is a fine screen above the
chaff cup. Top is hollow so the air/smoke goes down through the
heater/fan side (another tight gasket) of the unit & back up through
the roasting chamber.
Sells at the store for 149.99 w/ 1 lb of greens and (woo hoo) a VIDEO
TAPE.
You set the time for roasting. Light 20-22 min, medium 23-26, dark
37-30+. Max set time is 30 min. but this can be extended by 5 min.
once. There's a 5 min cool cycle. They recommend waiting 10 minutes
after the cool cycle has stopped before removing the top of the
roaster. [The machine is still hot] So - that's around 40 minutes total
roasting/cooling-cycle/further-cooling for a 5 oz. medium roast. (I
roast 8 oz. [by weight] in the alp in a total time of around 22
minutes. Can do two 3.5 oz roasts in the HIP in about 25
They had several baskets of 1 lb. bags of Z&D greens, all at 5.99/lb.
Mocha Java, Tanzanian peaberry, Guat. Huehue., Colombian Supremo,
Sumatra Mandheling, Espresso Blend, Zach's Breakfast Blend, and Dani's
Decaf. Now you all know as much about Z&D's greens as I do!
The only appealing feature of the Z&D roaster is its _claim_ of no
smoke.
If each of you on the list will send me a couple of dollars, I'll
gladly purchase the unit and give it a thorough work out. :)
Attach your $2 to an email and send it to jdhud....
And one more thing - the TV/website offer (same price) includes the
roaster, 3 lbs. of greens, an air tight cannister, & a blade grinder.
Saw no mention of the cannister or grinder at TGI today.
Unless those contributions arrive soon, I think I'll have to get along
without a Z&D roster.
