Topic: Kauai Estate Reserve (30 lines)
1) From: Mike McGinness
Someone asked about the Kauai Estate Peaberry. While I haven't tried it I
got a couple pounds of their Estate Reserve (direct) earlier this year. I
roasted some again and tried it this morning. Again this roasting and
cupping, I was not impressed. It's not a bad cup. First thought it reminds
me of Australian Skybury or maybe Bali Shinzan. It in no way resembles Kona
in it's flavor or complexity. I won't buy it again but don't consider it a
rip off either. Just don't expect anything resembling a Kona profile in the
cup. Sure it's worth $6# or so. Also, what I'm cupping is not Peaberry, and
of course not the same lot Tom is offering...
As a 'control' I roasted a batch Kona back to back the Kauai. This is a new
to me Kona. Pearlman's Estate, a high altitude (3000' if I recall)
organically certified Kona. A new member of the Pele Plantation family of
Estate Kona offerings. The greens looked and smelled great. (checked them
out while visiting Gus & Cynthia) So I picked up a couple pounds to try.
(not cheap, $33 for 2#) Now this is Top Kona. Is it worth it. Absolutely no
question.
