Topic: Guatemalan Coban Tanchi (60 lines)
1) From: Jack Berry
I roasted the first Coban batch last night and tried it as an Americano this
morning. From Tom's description alone I ordered 5 lbs. I roasted 90g for
~7.5 minutes in my HWP and allowed only 8 hrs for the rest before making the
first cup so I wasn't expecting it to be all Tom claimed. The ground coffee
seemed to best match the SWP chip 2736. I was about 10 seconds into the
second crack when I hit the cool switch. I always rock the HWP in a sort of
orbital motion every 20 or thirty seconds to ensure an even roast. I was
surprised that some beans seemed lighter than the majority. Those beans
seemed a little smaller/smoother. There weren't many, 2 or 3% maybe.
While I hope it improves with a little more rest and that I can fine tune
the roast a bit I won't be disappointed if every cup is exactly like the
first. The aroma was amazing, the taste was rich and if I understand the
term balance, it's very balanced as well. This is a novice appraisal, I've
got a lot more on the list to try for even the first time. I hope Tom can
continue to find Cobans and keep them on the list.
