Topic: Pigment Mixer Gear Motors for Roaster (7 msgs / 123 lines)

Just to be clear, what I have aren't rotisserie drive motors.  But little
gear motors like you might buy at Graingers.  These have a 5/16" round shaft
(with set-screw flat) that extends 7/8" past the three mounting posts.
Looking at the shaft they turn CW.

I'm going to guess at about 5 inch-pounds torque.  I can't stop it with my
fingers, but I can stop it easily with a pair of pliers.
I couldn't find a small enough coupler in Graingers.  If the drum weight was
supported on both ends, you could just use a home-made rigid couple like a
piece of tubing with two set screws.
I looked in Graingers, larger gear motors specs say you can put 50# of
overhang weight on the units.  Perhaps 1# of beans isn't an excessive weight
after all as long as the far end of the drum was supported.  What you don't
want is a cantilevered drum, the gear motor bearings wouldn't like that.

Do you have any knowledge how well motors can take weight thrust on the 
shaft.  I am considering having the drum at an angle so if I don't use a 
locking bearing could the motor take (um, sine of up to 25 degrees, 
calculate, um) some amount of weight less than the drum and beans?  The 
drum would be fully supported, so it would just be thrust.

Generally, motors can take almost no thrust load.  That is normally handled
by external thrust bearings.  They can take a little, but not much.  If you
were to add a bronze bearing washer onto the shaft between the drum and the
gear housing, it would take the thrust load. Dan

That is rather what I figured I would have to do.  I have found a number of 
sealed bearing in C&H supply, but do not understand how they work, per 
se.  I understand the inner bore rotates, an keeps the load off of the 
motor, but I don't grasp how either to keep the entire bearing in place or 
how to lock the inner bore to the shaft in question.  It seems there needs 
to be so ilk of tapped locking nut.  Think you could enlighten me.
BTW, to the list, if this is going to far afield of roasting, let me know, 
and I will see about moving the discussion.
