I got my Krups Gusto today, along with a couple of SS double wall cups.
I had about 3 grams of Illi (sp?) from my brother in law that uses it as
drip to compare the grind. After messing around with my Zass a little
bit, and using the bathroom scale to get a 30 lb tamp, I pulled a 26
second 2 Oz shot.
Then I found out how sensitive the zass ( and espresso ) is to the
grind. Less than half a turn coarser, and 12 to 15 second shots (down
the drain). When I got the Zass back in line, I pulled a couple of
shots, and two good americano's. I used a coffee I know to do this,
therefore I am fairly satisfied the machine did its job right. Tomorrow
morning, I going to compare this coffee using my standard vac pot to see
if I can taste the difference.
I can't say that I loved the shots I pulled, but then I am using a local
roasters (I killed my roaster - another story) Italian espresso blend,
so I'm guessing its the coffee, and not the machine, or my usage because
of the good repeatable americano's I can pull.
Does that make sense? I know the gusto isn't a Silva etc. - but it is a
boiler pump machine.

I have a mediocre pump machine, but if I do it right, I can get shots better
than those I can get in almost any restaurant or cafe. You sound like you
were doing it right.
