Topic: New FR+ roasting chambers (29 lines)
1) From: Jim Schulman
As all FR users know, it's necessary to
occasionally replace the roasting chambers. The
new chambers have a redesigned heavier base that
has a glued in metal ring on the inside to hold
the screen down.
But there's a problem: The base is deeper, sitting
further down in the well of base. In effect, the
beans are now 1/3 inche closer to the heater, and
the air flow is partially blocked.
I don't know if this was deliberate or an
oversight; but I scorched about 10% of my beans
within 30 seconds of starting the roast even
though the bean movement was good. I could only
prevent this by frequently switching the roaster
off early in the roast.
It's easy enough to fix, make a ring of folded
tinfoil or thick wire underneath the chamber's
collar to lift it to the height of the old
chambers (about 1/3 inch).
