Hi..
Can anyone tell me the differences between the two and if they can be
distinguished apart visually?
Thanks.

Rich,
The FR has a slide to adjust the air flow - the FR+ does not. Aside from
that, the screen mesh size is larger in the FR+. That would be all that is
visible to the eye. You can't go wrong with either.

The FR I was given (thanks Scott) was the first "power" roaster
I've used, after many years of roasting by hand, and it was lots
of fun. After a month of use, though, it stopped heating the
beans enough to reach second crack. Could it be because parts of
the plastic on the chaff collecter broke off where it goes
around the roasting chamber, leading to hot air leakage up
there? The heating element still gets bright orange. I used to
have to switch to cool mode every 10 seconds to keep it from
racing to french roast in 4 minutes. Now 20 minutes won't start
second crack. For softer beans (Kona for example) it still
roasts nice, but for high grown hard beans it just won't quite
get there. Any FR users have this problem?
Charlie

Charlie,
I haven't seen the plastic breaking away on either of my FR's but if the
seal isn't good at the base you are going to lose heat. You can buy a
replacement chamber pretty cheaply from Tim and he gets them out the same
day ordered.

Thanks, John. The base is fine, it's the part of the chaff
collecter that's lost some plastic where it goes around the top
of the glass. Maybe those are replacable, too?

Ah! Yes the top can be replaced too ($8) but that shouldn't cause you to
lose heat - unless it is really leaking air. If you are using a FR as
opposed to the FR+ you will get much better roasts with a new style top
(larger screen grid) and it would be worth the $8 to get the difference.
