Topic: Xmas Roast '02 (46 lines)
1) From: Rick Farris
I'm in the middle of my Xmas '02 roasting process. My plan was to make up
packets of four different greens to give as Christmas gifts. I wanted four
distinctly different tastes, so I thought that Nicaragua Segovia, Timor
Aifu, Yemen Mokha Ismaili, and Hawaii Kona would be a nice series. Not only
that, but Timor being a Java analogue, I could suggest that they try mixing
the Mokha and the Timor.
I roasted up the Timor and the Nicaraguan, but when it came to the Mokha,
all of a sudden I realized "I have an Alpenrost." About half the beans
would sift through the holes in the roasting drum of the Alp. (Did I
mention that I just stocked up on Yemeni coffees, thinking that upcoming
hostilities in the area might make them rare? )
I sat down and thought for a while and realized that in my search for a
Kenyan I liked, I had accumulated about 20 lbs of various varieties, and
that this would be a good chance to shed a couple of pounds! Not only that,
but it is quite different from the other coffees I was planning on giving.
Life is good.
So now I'm done with everything but the Kona -- I saved it for last so I
would be good and experienced with my ALPENROST! :-)
Tomorrow I'll be done. All I've got left to do is make up labels for the
1/4# valve-bags I'm giving them in and make up a descriptive letter like
miKe's Koffee Klub inKlusion.
Oh. I have a couple (ok, three) people on my gift list that don't have
coffee grinders. I was going to give them $16 whirly grinders from the
grocery store, but Dillards, a local department store, had a
whirly-grinder/thermal cup combination on sale for $20, already gift
wrapped, so I picked up three of those. One person doesn't even have a
coffee pot, so he gets a $1.30 Melitta one-cupper.
I have a few of the 15# burlap sacks that Tom sells, so my Xmas packs are a
burlap sack with several valve-bags of coffee inside, as well as any other
gifts I'm giving to the person, like the grinder/cup packs. I'll wrap a
ribbon around the top and add a bow. I wish I'd gotten together Retiring
John's idea of printing transfers for the small burlap sacks, but, oh well.
