Topic: connoisseur vs. snob (3 msgs / 64 lines)

Connoisseur most appropriate IMO. BTW Charlie, both spellings are correct!
With an "a" it's the current French spelling. With an "o" the accepted
English spelling. What's interesting is the "a" spelling is NOT found in
Webster's online, yet the "o" spelling refers to it...
Merriam-Webster:
Main Entry: con·nois·seur
Pronunciation: "kä-n&-'s&r also -'sur
Function: noun
Etymology: obsolete French (now connaisseur), from Old French connoisseor,
from connoistre to know, from Latin cognoscere -- more at COGNITION
Date: 1714
1 : EXPERT; especially : one who understands the details, technique, or
principles of an art and is competent to act as a critical judge
2 : one who enjoys with discrimination and appreciation of subtleties

Not true. Not in English anyway.

Yes, but not English.

That's because it's not an English word. The *etymology* of the English
word mentions that the "a" spelling is French. (Not English) (Which is the
language we speak here.) :-)

But let's not forget "English" tends to be a bastard language using words
from anywhere and everywhere. Then there's American English and British
English, often spelling the same word differently. Or even American English
spelling the same sounding word differently - one/won for example or
eight/ate etc. Not that it matters or has anything to do with coffee!
