How very true. I know my consistency at hitting a desired roast improved
greatly after adding temperature monitoring. Still use smell, sound and
sight of course but my primary gauge is temp'.
Very well for the "Home Improvement" mechanics and electricians, but
what is the poor guy just starting out with his first roaster to do?  He
is just not ready to drill holes in or rewire his first roaster right
out of the box!  Yet he needs to taste the rewards of home roasting if
he is to continue to pursue it. We need to give him some descriptive and
non technical ways to recognize a mature roast - ways that involve
nothing more than informed sensory information.  Later he can join the
ranks of the electronically talented do-it-yourself roasters.
