I just noticed while I was looking for a thermometer that Tom has the
really cool (at least I love mine - it feels good) Illy scoop for only
$4.00. I just paid $8.50 when I ordered one with my Sylvia. I'm very
excited. I am going to temperature monitor my roasts. Until I started
participating in this group I never would have dreamed such a thing. My
roasts have already improved noticeably since I have been learning from
this group. My cats have decided that I have typed enough.

This is one of those extras that has turned out to be a great
boon for me. The bonus (over its simple brushed/polished
elegance) is in its shape and delivery performance.
I can tell, by how well the delivered scoop matches the
shape of the tool, about how much tamp I will need to try
for a particular new roast. The way a coffee holds together
tells me something about the particle size, freshness and/or
oiliness and the related packability. This diagnostic feature
was unexpected. I noticed it immediately when I used it to
deliver my first scoop of preground illy. It's not hard science
but I get a good feel for a roast with the first grind/scoop.
