Now there's a reference that not too many people on this list will fully
understand. (Not that I can claim to; I've never flown either. Yet.)
Sounds like you pretty much have to be a pilot. Do you use some other
address for the aviation groups or simply not participate in them? Out of
curiosity, I Googled for you at rec.aviation.* and didn't come up with
anything.

I happen to have a best friend that allows me to 'feel' like a pilot. Back a
few years ago, he and I were flying his private plane several days a week
(Cherokee 140). He taught me instrument flying and many emergency procedures
in preparation for obtaining my private pilot's license. Things happen, and
I never got my license, but I learned quite a bit from him.
He's an FAA examiner, a trainer and a captain for UPS and flies the huge
birds (MD11 and 737). Several times I was fortunate enough to fly their
incredible simulators in Louisville. I was the only person in a group of
private pilots that was able to fly the mapped course and get the DC-8 on the
ground in one piece, even though the sim operator was urged by a few of the
jealous pilots to throw in a microburst right at the beginning of the runway
. Those multi million dollar simulators are so realistic that
time in the simulators is able to be logged in the flight logs as real flying
time for the pilots. They are on hydraulics to simulate everything from G
forces to braking to thrust, as well as the bumpety bump of rolling down the
runway. The visuals are enough to make palms sweaty.
He's also into aerobatic flying with a Midget Mustang he built. It's a one
seater, so I've never flown that, but I've taken midair pictures of it from
another aircraft wing to wing.
The Extra 300S is just a cool plane I fly on my computer all the time. I
wish I had a more exciting story to tell about my incredible feats as a
pilot, but I can't.
