Thanks for the suggestion of making the coffee directly into the drinking
cup.  I have it even easier than a wire to measure the height/depth.  I
focus on the 25-30 second extraction time, and then will add hot water to a
line for constant finished quantity.  If I don't get the volume of a double
shot, I am diluting my concentrated shot more, and if I get too much volume,
it starts approaching a coffee crema.
I like it.  Too bad I have to remove the grate on my drip tray to put a cup
under my portafilter.
