I feel like I have become an expert with the Caffe Rosto because I am on my 3rd Rosto. Thankfully, the 3rd rosto has been working as advertised. With 9-11 minutes I have a full-city/vienna with great brightness. My first machine took 20 minutes to get anywhere close to full-city. Then it died, after a week, nothing at all was working, not even the fan, motor. My 2nd Rosto was roasting as advertised for one week and then began to blow only cold air, the thermal fuse died. Your 1st Rosto was obviously a dud. I live in NJ and was told by Brightway that my voltage was perhaps too high, etc. You shouldn't need to put a box around it for it to work properly. I use a surge protector with my Rosto with excellent results. Also, If I add minutes to my roasting, the beans will become charcoal.

I agree with Frank, you should be able to do a dark dark roast in 13min
no-mods, 1/3# batch, 120v at your outlet, without a box (it doesn't get
*that* cold on the Big Island!:) The only time I needed a box was down under
40f ambient (pre variac roasting days) However, if your voltage is down
around 110v you could have problems depending on the individual Rosto. My
two are very different. One will do Vienna 470 roast 120v the other needs
130v, both 1/3# batches, ambient around 50f.
