Topic: ?? new Hearthware roaster ?? (14 msgs / 253 lines)
1) From: Lee XOC
Have I been missing some info on the new HW roaster? I know there's a
new HW that's either just come out or is supposed to come out soon. Is
this the new Precision -- the all black model, or has that one been out
for a while?
If it's not that one, when is the new one supposed to come out?
If it is that one, has anyone been using it? Is it any good? How come
SM isn't offering it (yet?)?
Confusion abounds....

I don't remember where I read it - here, CoffeeGeek.com,
alt.coffee, - but someone had contacted Hearthware in the last
month and was told by Hearthware that the new release date was
May/June 2003.
Maybe Hearthware will have an actual working prototype at the
SCAA here in Boston!?
Speaking of which - I hope that I get the opportunity to meet
some of you in April at the SCAA Conference.
Regards,
Matt Hodges

Okay, so the one pictured first in the list of roasters on
hearthware.com is an existing model I guess? How long has that one been
out? Anyone hear using this one?

That's the old HWG model. The new HWP is suppossed to have two knobs. One
for heat and one for time. Dan

It sounds like they are going to use SCR's for current control in the heater
circuit. Much simpler than variacs or transformers to reduce voltage and
have variable control.

Or, they are going to let you vary the HWP's fixed calibration resistor
mounted on the circuit board. I believe there was someone who did this.
I've not bothered with this modification since my next project is to build a
roaster from the ground up using the new roaster controller being designed.

model":http://www.hearthware.com/images/pcr.jpg This is the one I'm
confused about.
The one you're saying is the old Precision is what they're calling the
"Home Innovation". Their Gourmet pic matches your pic.

I had been looking forward to it, but since my current HWG has slowed down
again, I had to buy an interim roaster, or come up with some other
alternative. I now have what I consider the ideal roasting set-up. I got
out my Poppery I, and use it for roasting - quiet, and roasts 3/4 cup. I
then use the HWG for cooling. Since it isn't hot to start with, it really
cools the beans quickly. I'm not sure what would convince me to get a new
roaster; although it is a bit of a pain to have to lug 2 units outside.

I have the Home Innovation HWP, its the white one with new control bezel.
Both it and the black model use the same molds except for the control panel
bezel. The knobs are slightly different. I don't know about the guts, I've
not seen a black model taken apart. My guess is that any differences are
cosmetic. But, its a moot point since neither is in production, only the
HWG. Dan

Ok, thanks for the info. Curious though that HW lists it as their best
model for sale when it's out of production ... guess maybe they're
selling off existing stock to make way for the new one coming.
